WhatsApp is introducing usernames to enhance privacy. Here’s how UAE users can reserve theirs ahead of the rollout.

WhatsApp is introducing usernames as a major step toward improving user privacy by allowing people to connect without sharing phone numbers.
Announced by Meta, the feature will begin rolling out later this year. Users can already start reserving their preferred usernames in advance to increase the likelihood of securing their chosen handle before the global launch.
The update brings WhatsApp closer to platforms like Telegram, Signal, and Discord, where usernames have long enabled users to connect without exposing phone numbers or personal details.
Why WhatsApp is introducing usernames
According to a WhatsApp blog post, the feature is intended for situations where sharing a phone number may feel unnecessary or uncomfortable.
Whether joining a neighbourhood group, chatting with other parents from a child’s football team, or connecting with someone met at an event, usernames offer a more private way to start conversations.
Once enabled, users will be able to be contacted via their username instead of their phone number. There will be no public directory or searchable database, meaning others will still need to know the exact username to message you.
Meta is also introducing an optional Username Key, adding an extra layer of protection by requiring a unique key before someone can contact you through your username.
Businesses, creators, and organisations will also be able to reserve the same usernames they already use on Instagram or Facebook to maintain a consistent online identity.

How UAE users can reserve a WhatsApp username
If the reservation feature is available on your account, the process takes less than a minute:
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version from the App Store or Google Play
- Open WhatsApp
- Go to Settings
- Tap Account
- Select Username
- Enter your preferred username
- If it’s unavailable, use WhatsApp’s built-in suggestions
- Confirm your reservation
Can UAE users reserve a WhatsApp username yet?
Yes, but only if the feature has been enabled for your account. Meta is rolling out username reservations gradually, so not all users in the UAE will see it immediately. Even with the latest update, availability depends on server-side activation.
If the option isn’t visible yet, users will receive an in-app notification once it becomes available in their region.
