United Arab Emirates and the Philippines explore joint insurance initiatives to support Filipino workers.

Proposed system aims to enhance healthcare access and preventive care for Overseas Filipino Workers in the United Arab Emirates.

United Arab Emirates and the Philippines are exploring the development of a formal system that would allow Filipino workers in the UAE to access medical coverage under both countries’ national insurance programmes.

According to the Philippine Department of Health, the proposed framework aims to ensure coverage for check-ups and treatment of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) based in the UAE.

Officials from both sides are also promoting stronger health awareness initiatives focused on preventing chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, which are common among OFWs but often go untreated due to demanding work schedules and limited access to preventive healthcare.

The Philippines and the United Arab Emirates are prioritising chronic disease prevention in their joint health cooperation for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

During a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the World Health Assembly in Geneva on May 19, health officials from both countries agreed to draft concrete measures to strengthen preventive healthcare for Filipino expatriates in the UAE.

The proposed collaboration focuses on encouraging early screening, regular medical consultations, and improved awareness of preventive care to better address chronic conditions among OFWs.

The United Arab Emirates is home to a large Filipino community working across key sectors such as healthcare, hospitality, retail, and domestic services.

UAE Assistant Minister for Medical Affairs and Life Sciences Dr. Maha Barakat has acknowledged the contributions of Philippine Health Secretary Ted Herbosa in advancing initiatives that support the welfare of Filipinos in the UAE.

Barakat also praised Filipino healthcare professionals globally, describing them as “world-class” for their significant contributions to healthcare systems worldwide. She added that it is appropriate for both countries to jointly ensure the wellbeing of Filipinos, given their important role in the global health workforce.
