A ‘digital school’ that will educate one million refugee students has been launched in Dubai.

In an announcement he tweeted today, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said this school — which will provide smart education — aims to reach 20,000 students this year.

“Our target is to educate one million students from disadvantaged groups within five years,” Sheikh Mohammed tweeted.

The new school will be working with international agencies to get an approval for its curriculum.

Sheikh Mohammed pointed out that there’s currently an “education gap” in the Arab world. Millions of students have lost years of education because of conflicts and economic problems, he said.

“If no one acted to face these challenges, generations will come, led by ignorance and extremism, instead of them leading their nations with the light of knowledge,” Sheikh Mohammed stressed.

During the launch ceremony on Wednesday, Omar Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications, said education is key to a brighter future anywhere.

“If you want to change the future of a nation, change the education pattern. It is the weapon that is going to lead to a brighter future.”

He said Covid-19 has thrown “education challenges” and forced 1.6 billion students around the world out of schools.

“Students in refugee camps do not have access to education and to a school. They may have access to content. But they cannot call themselves students in a specific module or curriculum that is accredited globally. This is a challenge that Sheikh Mohammed has set out to overcome — a challenge to provide schooling to people who need it the most. If we want to change the future of the Middle East, then we have to educate those who need it the most.”
