Gully Boy is India’s official entry for Oscars this year. The film was reportedly competing with Ayushmann Khurrana’s Badhaai Ho and Andhahun.
Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt’s Gully Boy has been named as India’s official entry to Oscars 2019. Directed by Zoya Akhtar, Gully Boy chronicled the story of Mumbai’s street rappers and was said to loosely based on rapper Naezy’s life.
The film will complete in the 92nd Academy Awards in Best Foreign Language Film category, officially known as the Best International Feature Film category. As per reports, Ayushmann Khurrana’s AndhaDhun, Article 15, Badhaai Ho, Varun Dhawan’s Badla, among others were competing with Gully Boy for the nomination.
Announcing the development, producer Guneet Monga tweeted to congratulate the team and Gully Boy producer replied with a humble ‘Thank you’. From India to Oscars “Apna Time Aayega” #GULLYBOY by Zoya Akhtar congratulations @ZoyaAkhtarOff @ritesh_sid @RanveerOfficial @aliaa08 @MrVijayVarma 2019 India’s entry to @TheAcademy” Monga tweeted Saturday evening.
Released earlier this year, the film received widespread praise from critics as well as the audience. It is among the top earners of 2019.
Talking about Vijay Raaz’s character ()Ranveer’s onscreen dad), Zoya had told Hindustan Times, ““As a system and as a society, we create people like that. The whole class system has oppressed so many people and given them such lack of opportunity. They are fed such strong narratives that this is where you belong and this is where you are. Because you belong to this community, you have only these options. Because you don’t have opportunity to study, you don’t have opportunity to further yourself. And you kind of tend to believe your lot that this is what you have been given. I think on some level we have colonised people, our own people. When you colonise someone’s dream, that’s the worst thing you can do. To make an entire population of people believe that they don’t deserve better… I think he is a victim of that. He oppresses the weak and the oppressed.”
Several countries have announced their official entry for the Academy Awards 2020 that will be held in February. Refugee family drama Antigone, by writer-director Sophie Deraspe, is Canada’s official entry for the International Feature Film category Oscar. The French language film is an adaptation of classic Greek play of the same name written by Sophocles.
The 92nd Academy Awards will take place on February 9, 2020 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, US.
