Man killed on Sheikh Zayed Road after exiting car on shoulder

Authorities warn that stopping on road shoulders without an emergency constitutes a serious violation.

Dubai: Dubai Police have issued a stern warning to motorists against stopping on road shoulders without a valid reason, urging drivers to move vehicles to the nearest safe parking area during breakdowns or emergencies. Authorities stressed that unjustified stopping on the shoulder is a serious traffic violation that can cause accidents and disrupt traffic flow.

The warning follows a fatal incident on Sheikh Zayed Road near the Al Yalayis Bridge heading towards Abu Dhabi, where a person was killed after a vehicle stopped unsafely on the left shoulder.

How the accident happened
Brigadier Juma bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic, explained that the incident occurred following a collision between two vehicles. “Both drivers stopped on the left shoulder next to the first fast lane—an area where stopping is prohibited except in emergencies,” he said.

While inspecting the damage, one driver exited their vehicle and was struck by an oncoming car. “Due to speed and limited distance, the driver was unable to avoid the pedestrian, resulting in the victim’s death at the scene,” Brigadier Bin Suwaidan added.

The official highlighted excessive speed and failure to maintain a safe following distance as key contributing factors. Drivers are urged to observe speed limits, stay attentive to road conditions, and anticipate unexpected situations on highways.

Strict rules for road shoulder use
Stopping on the road shoulder is permitted only in emergencies, such as sudden breakdowns or medical situations. Non-emergency stops can result in serious accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

Brigadier Bin Suwaidan also emphasized the importance of raising driver awareness, urging motorists to move to the safe right side of the road whenever possible and avoid stopping in hazardous locations on highways.

Dubai Police confirmed that strict penalties will continue to be enforced against dangerous traffic behaviors that threaten lives and property.
