Decision to pedestrianise the well-known food street has been made by Sindh government
Karachi: One of the famous roads in Karachi in its downtown area is being pedestrianized to give it the shape of a proper food street in the evenings much on the pattern of similar food streets in cultural capital Lahore.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of District South of Karachi, which is the main business district of the city, has issued the order to properly pedestrianize the Burnes Road from January 10, 2021 to give it the shape of a proper food street in the evenings.
The decades-old Burnes Road in Karachi has the outlets of many prominent eateries in Karachi as the area is famous among the residents of the city and food bloggers.
The DC of District South issued this order in his capacity as the chairman of Traffic Management Board of the district.
The orders to pedestrianize the road will be enforced from 7pm onwards daily after the volume of evening rush hour traffic decreases.
According to DC South, Irshad Ali Sodhar, Burnes Road is being developed as a proper food street as the New Year gift for people of the city.
He said that area residents would be issued special vehicular stickers so that their personal vehicles could be parked around the pedestrianized zone.
He said that valet service would also be launched to facilitate the visitors of the Burnes Road food street.
He said that proper marking would be done on the road for placement of the seating arrangements of the eateries in the area to avoid the situation of encroachment.
He said the district administration was under obligation to provide neat and clean environment and food service to the customers in the area.
The Sindh Government at the same time has been working to upgrade basic civic infrastructure and build open public spaces for recreation of the area people in some of the selected localities of Karachi under a World Bank-assisted programme namely Karachi Neighbourhood Improvement Project.
