A Complete Guide to Salary Eligibility and Required Documents for Sponsoring Spouses, Children and Parents in Dubai.

Dubai: UAE residents who wish to bring their spouse, children or parents to live with them must meet specific financial and eligibility conditions to obtain family residence visas.

One of the most important factors is the sponsor’s monthly income. However, the minimum salary requirement varies depending on the family member being sponsored.

For most eligible family members, the minimum monthly salary starts at Dh3,000 with employer-provided accommodation. Residents planning to sponsor their parents in Dubai must meet separate financial and residency conditions.

Here is an overview of the income thresholds and essential requirements for family sponsorship in Dubai.

Minimum Salary Required to Sponsor a Spouse or Children

According to the UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), residents must satisfy certain income requirements to sponsor their eligible family members.

The minimum monthly salary requirements are:

  • Dh3,000 per month if accommodation is provided by the employer.
  • Dh4,000 per month if the sponsor arranges their own accommodation.

In addition to meeting the salary criteria, applicants must hold a valid UAE residence permit and have suitable housing arrangements for their dependants.

Which Family Members Can Be Sponsored?

Under the general UAE family sponsorship regulations, eligible residents may apply for residence visas for the following dependants:

  • Spouse: A legally married husband or wife.
  • Unmarried daughters: Eligible for sponsorship subject to the applicable residency conditions.
  • Sons below 25 years of age: Residents can generally sponsor their sons until they reach the specified age limit.
  • Children with special needs: May qualify for sponsorship regardless of their age, provided the relevant eligibility requirements are fulfilled.

Applicants must also comply with the applicable immigration procedures and submit the necessary supporting documents when applying for family residence visas.

Can Women Sponsor Their Husbands and Children in the UAE?

Women residing in the UAE are also eligible to sponsor their husbands and children, provided they meet the required income and residency conditions.

According to Firose Khan, CEO and Managing Partner of Arabian Business Centre – Amer, the minimum salary requirements are the same for female sponsors:

  • Dh3,000 monthly with employer-provided accommodation.
  • Dh4,000 monthly without employer-provided accommodation.

However, mothers applying to sponsor their children may need to submit additional supporting documents depending on their family circumstances.

These may include a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the father or legal documentation confirming custody or guardianship in cases involving divorced parents.

Higher Salary Requirements for Sponsoring Parents in Dubai

Residents wishing to sponsor their parents in Dubai must satisfy a higher minimum income requirement than those sponsoring spouses or children.

Khan explained that the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai currently specifies a minimum monthly salary of Dh10,000 for residents applying to sponsor their parents.

Applicants must provide a salary certificate or employment contract confirming their earnings, along with a valid Ejari tenancy registration.

Additionally, the sponsor’s residence must have at least two bedrooms to meet the accommodation requirements for parent sponsorship.

Essential Documents for Family Visa Sponsorship

The documents needed for a family residence visa depend on the relationship between the sponsor and the applicant, as well as their individual circumstances.

Generally, applicants should prepare the following:

  • A valid passport belonging to the sponsor.
  • A copy of the sponsor’s Emirates ID.
  • Proof of valid UAE residency.
  • A passport copy of the family member being sponsored.
  • A recent passport-sized photograph.
  • An attested marriage certificate when sponsoring a husband or wife.
  • An attested birth certificate when sponsoring children.
  • A salary certificate or employment contract confirming monthly earnings.
  • A registered tenancy agreement or Ejari, where applicable.
  • A recent electricity or water bill, if requested.
  • Valid health insurance coverage.
  • Any additional identification or immigration documents required based on nationality or individual circumstances.

Marriage and birth certificates submitted as evidence of family relationships may require official attestation in the issuing country and verification by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

Additional Documents Needed to Sponsor Parents

Residents applying for their parents’ residence visas in Dubai must meet additional documentation requirements established by GDRFA.

These generally include:

  • A copy of the parent’s valid passport.
  • A salary certificate or employment contract demonstrating the sponsor’s eligibility.
  • An attested tenancy agreement confirming suitable accommodation for the family.
  • A recent bank statement showing the sponsor’s financial details.

Immigration authorities may request further supporting documents depending on the application and the sponsor’s circumstances.

Medical Fitness Requirements for Family Residence Visas

Family members above the age of 18 are generally required to complete an approved medical fitness examination before obtaining their UAE residence visas.

The examination forms part of the residency application process and must be conducted at an authorised medical fitness centre.

Important Information for UAE Residents

Family sponsorship regulations, salary thresholds and documentation requirements may change periodically. Eligibility can also vary according to the sponsor’s circumstances and the family member being sponsored.

Residents are therefore advised to confirm the latest rules with the relevant immigration authorities before submitting their applications.

For Dubai residents, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) can be contacted through its toll-free number 8005111.

Residents of other emirates can contact the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) at 600522222 for guidance on applicable residency and sponsorship requirements.
