Forecasters warn that the UAE could experience up to 20 foggy days in March.

Date:

The Met Office advises the public to heed official alerts, as visibility could fall below 100 metres.

Dubai: Forecasters have warned that the UAE could experience fog on more than 20 days next month, making March the peak period for the phenomenon, and have urged motorists to follow official warnings.

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued alerts for the next three days, cautioning that horizontal visibility may drop significantly, sometimes approaching zero, particularly in certain inland areas.

Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society and a member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, noted that humidity levels usually stay high from early October to mid-March, often surpassing 85 percent.

Fog is most likely to develop when lower-atmosphere humidity exceeds 90 percent, typically during late-night and early-morning hours as surface temperatures fall.

He added that inland desert areas and coastal regions are especially susceptible to fog, while stronger surface winds tend to inhibit its formation.

Fog can reduce visibility to under 100 metres and, in some cases, cause complete whiteout conditions, posing dangers to motorists and potentially disrupting air traffic.

Abu Dhabi Police have implemented reduced speed limits on several major highways, urging drivers to keep speeds below 80 km/h during fog and to maintain safe distances between vehicles.

Authorities also cautioned against using high-beam headlights, as the light can reflect off the fog and further impair visibility.
