Four elite European clubs to battle it out in a two-day SuperCup showdown on Yas Island.
Abu Dhabi is set to host the inaugural EuroLeague Basketball SuperCup next month, bringing four of Europe’s top basketball clubs to Yas Island for a new two-day tournament that will kick off the European club season.
Organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) in partnership with Euroleague Basketball, the event will take place at Etihad Arena on September 18 and 19.
Two-day ticket packages are already available through the Etihad Arena website, while single-day tickets are scheduled to go on sale on August 31.
Four top clubs, two days of action
The tournament will bring together four of Europe’s leading basketball clubs — Olympiacos Piraeus, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, Real Madrid and Dubai Basketball — giving local fans the opportunity to watch some of the continent’s biggest teams compete on home soil.
The two-day competition will follow a four-team knockout format, with two games scheduled on each day.
On Friday, September 18, Olympiacos Piraeus will take on Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul at 6pm, followed by a 9pm clash between Dubai Basketball and Real Madrid.
The tournament will wrap up the following evening, with the third-place play-off scheduled for 6pm and the inaugural SuperCup final set for 9pm.
For Dubai Basketball, the tournament offers a chance to test themselves against some of Europe’s most established clubs while representing the UAE on a major international stage.
Abu Dhabi builds on basketball success
The SuperCup adds to Abu Dhabi’s growing calendar of major international sporting events, following the success of the EuroLeague Final Four in the emirate.
Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, Director General for Tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi, said hosting the new tournament reflects the emirate’s ambition to attract major sporting events to the capital while delivering memorable experiences for fans.
He added that the tournament would also benefit local businesses and the wider visitor economy, while encouraging more young people to take up an interest in basketball.
Dejan Bodiroga, President of Euroleague Basketball, said Abu Dhabi was an ideal choice to launch the new competition, highlighting the emirate’s growing interest in basketball and its strong record of hosting major international sporting events.
New fixture on basketball calendar
Chus Bueno, CEO of Euroleague Basketball, said the SuperCup aims to introduce European club basketball to new audiences while giving fans a high-quality event to mark the start of the season.
The tournament is part of a long-term partnership between Euroleague Basketball and DCT Abu Dhabi, with the agreement facilitated by Euroleague Basketball’s strategic partner, IMG.
Organisers hope the SuperCup will become a regular fixture on the international basketball calendar, bringing Europe’s top clubs to Abu Dhabi and further strengthening the emirate’s reputation as a destination for major sporting events.
