‘Eager to Try Them’: Dubai Residents Look Forward to Driverless Pods That Could Shorten Daily Commutes

Date:

Dubai’s RTA says the Bluewaters trial will evaluate the safety and reliability of driverless pods and explore how they could connect with the emirate’s existing public transport network.

Dubai: For many Dubai residents, the most challenging part of their daily commute begins after they step off the Metro or tram. Long walks, crowded buses and extended waiting times can make reaching their final destination difficult, particularly during the summer months.

Now, the introduction of driverless electric pods on a trial basis at Bluewaters Island is raising hopes among commuters for a faster and more convenient way to travel.

Syed M, an Al Barsha resident who works as an executive at a resort on Bluewaters Island, is among those looking forward to the new transport system.

His daily journey often involves a lengthy walk from the tram station to his workplace, crossing the pedestrian bridge connecting Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) to Bluewaters Island.

“I walk for around 20 minutes from the tram station to the hotel where I work at Bluewaters. In winter, it is manageable, but during summer the heat makes it unbearable,” Syed said.

Although his employer provides transport, missing the company service can significantly increase his travel time.

“We have company transport, but if I miss it, I have to wait for the bus from Jebel Ali Metro Station, sometimes for around 30 minutes. or the other option is cab or walking.”

For Syed, the driverless pods could offer a practical alternative by reducing the need for long walks or additional transport arrangements.

Dubai begins four-week driverless pod trial

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a four-week trial of the Dubai Glydways system at Bluewaters Island.

The technology uses compact, fully electric autonomous pods operating along dedicated guideways.

Designed to improve first- and last-mile connectivity, the system aims to make travelling between public transport stations and nearby residential, commercial and leisure destinations easier.

The trial will help authorities evaluate whether the pods can deliver safe, dependable journeys while integrating effectively with Dubai’s existing public transport infrastructure.

Business Bay commuters hope for shorter waiting times

Residents and employees in other busy parts of Dubai are also expressing interest in the technology.

Hassan, who works in Business Bay, believes the district would benefit from improved last-mile transport options because of its high concentration of offices and daily commuters.

“Business Bay needs a last-mile solution because there are so many offices here. The buses going to Business Bay Metro Station are often full, especially during busy hours.”

He said a continuous pod service could reduce dependence on crowded buses and taxis, particularly during peak commuting periods.

“If these pods keep moving continuously, people can get from point A to point B faster without waiting for a crowded bus or taking a taxi,” Hassan said.

Business Bay is among several locations being considered by RTA for potential future driverless pod routes.

Other areas under evaluation include Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai Festival City and Mohammed bin Rashid City.

Authorities are also studying a proposed 2.8km route connecting National Paints Metro Station with Bluewaters Island.

Dubai Festival City workers see potential benefits

For Sameed, a sales executive at a retail store in Dubai Festival City Mall, reliable connections between public transport and workplaces could make a considerable difference.

The Sharjah resident usually travels to work through a shared car-lift arrangement.

However, when he misses his regular transport, his commute becomes considerably longer and more complicated.

He must instead take the Metro to Emirates Metro Station before transferring to a bus serving Dubai Festival City.

“It takes more time and becomes difficult. If there is a Metro station here in the future and pods can take us directly to the mall, it will be very helpful.”

Dubai Festival City is expected to receive a Metro station through the upcoming Dubai Metro Blue Line, which is scheduled to begin operations in 2029.

Until the new line opens, many commuters travelling to the area continue to rely on buses, taxis and private vehicles to complete their journeys from existing Metro stations.

The possibility of introducing autonomous pods could provide another transport option, particularly for workers and visitors travelling between stations and commercial destinations.

Could driverless pods transform Dubai’s daily commute?

RTA has said the Bluewaters trial will focus on assessing the system’s safety, operational reliability and potential integration with the wider public transport network.

A key objective is to determine whether autonomous pods can improve first- and last-mile travel, an important part of the commuting experience for people who rely on the Metro, tram and buses.

For residents such as Syed, Hassan and Sameed, the appeal is simple: shorter journeys, fewer lengthy walks in extreme heat and less time spent waiting for connecting transport.

If the trial proves successful and the system is expanded, driverless pods could offer commuters a more convenient way to travel between public transport stations, workplaces, homes and popular destinations across Dubai.
