Dubai Vehicle Impoundment Regulations: Traffic Offences, Release Charges and Fines Explained.

Dubai: Traffic violations in Dubai can lead to consequences beyond financial penalties and black points. Certain serious offences may also result in vehicle impoundment, with release charges reaching as high as Dh100,000.

During the first nine months of 2026, Dubai Police issued 7,735 traffic fines and impounded 1,630 vehicles as part of enforcement operations targeting excessive vehicle noise and unauthorised modifications.

While many traffic offences attract fines and black points, vehicle impoundment is an additional penalty that comes with separate release charges and specific conditions.

Which Traffic Offences Can Lead to Vehicle Impoundment in Dubai?

Under Dubai’s Decree No. 30 of 2023, which amended the emirate’s vehicle impoundment regulations, several serious traffic offences can result in vehicles being seized by authorities.

Depending on the nature and severity of the violation, motorists may face vehicle release charges ranging from Dh10,000 to Dh100,000, in addition to other applicable fines and penalties.

Traffic Violation Carrying a Dh100,000 Release Fee

  • Taking part in an unauthorised road race without obtaining prior permission from Dubai Police.

Traffic Violations Carrying a Dh50,000 Release Fee

  • Driving recklessly or in a manner that threatens public safety, lives or property.
  • Running a red traffic signal.
  • Using forged, counterfeit, altered or obscured vehicle registration plates, or displaying plates in violation of traffic regulations.
  • Intentionally colliding with or causing damage to a police vehicle.
  • Driving a vehicle while under the age of 18.

Traffic Violations Carrying a Dh10,000 Release Fee

  • Making substantial vehicle modifications that increase speed or generate excessive noise.
  • Attempting to escape or evade police officers.
  • Operating a vehicle without registration number plates.
  • Gathering to watch unauthorised road races, engaging in associated disturbances or performing dangerous vehicle stunts on public roads.
  • Exceeding the legally permitted window tinting percentage or applying tint to the front windscreen without official approval.

Can Dubai Police Impound Vehicles Over Unpaid Traffic Fines?

Yes. Vehicles with accumulated outstanding traffic fines exceeding Dh6,000 may be impounded by Dubai Police.

To recover the vehicle, the registered owner must clear the unpaid traffic penalties and comply with the relevant release requirements.

How to Retrieve an Impounded Vehicle in Dubai

The procedure for releasing an impounded vehicle varies depending on the offence and whether the impoundment is mandatory or imposed at the discretion of Dubai Police.

For violations where discretionary impoundment applies, vehicle owners may need to fulfil the following requirements:

  1. Complete the impoundment period: Serve the required duration or, where permitted, pay an early-release fee with Dubai Police approval.
  2. Clear outstanding penalties: Settle all unpaid traffic fines associated with the vehicle.
  3. Rectify the violation: Address the issue that resulted in the vehicle being impounded, such as removing unauthorised modifications.
  4. Meet additional conditions: Fulfil any further requirements specified by Dubai Police before the vehicle can be released.

What Happens If You Delay Collecting Your Vehicle?

Motorists are required to collect their vehicles once the designated impoundment period has ended and all release conditions have been satisfied.

Failure to retrieve the vehicle on time will result in an additional Dh50 charge per day for each day it remains at the impoundment facility.

These daily charges can increase the overall cost of recovering the vehicle, making it important for owners to complete the necessary procedures promptly.

Motorists are encouraged to follow traffic regulations, avoid dangerous driving practices and regularly check for outstanding fines to reduce the risk of vehicle impoundment and additional financial penalties.

What Happens If Your Vehicle Is Impounded Again?

Motorists who commit repeat traffic offences in Dubai may face substantially tougher penalties, including longer vehicle impoundment periods and increased release charges.

If a vehicle is impounded for a second time within one year of the violation that led to its previous impoundment, the following penalties may apply:

  • Longer impoundment period: For offences where Dubai Police have the authority to determine the duration, the impoundment period will be doubled, subject to a maximum of 90 days.
  • Higher vehicle release charges: For violations carrying release fees of Dh10,000, Dh50,000 or Dh100,000, the applicable amount will be doubled, with a maximum limit of Dh200,000.

These stricter penalties are intended to discourage repeat violations and encourage motorists to comply with road safety regulations.

Can Running a Red Light Result in Deportation from the UAE?

Yes, but this penalty applies only under specific circumstances.

According to Dubai’s vehicle impoundment regulations, non-UAE national drivers operating heavy vehicles who run a red traffic signal are subject to administrative deportation from the country.

This measure applies in addition to any other traffic fines, vehicle impoundment penalties or legal consequences associated with the offence.

The deportation provision specifically concerns non-UAE national heavy-vehicle drivers and should not be interpreted as applying automatically to every motorist who runs a red light.
