Dubai Truck Restrictions Vary by Route, With Round-the-Clock Bans on Some Roads.
Dubai: Restrictions on truck movements across several roads in the emirate will take effect from October 1, 2026, as part of existing peak-hour traffic management measures. Emirates Road will remain exempt from the restrictions.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police announced the implementation of the measures as part of their joint efforts to ease traffic congestion and enhance road safety.
Authorities said the restrictions have been designed while considering the operational needs of the commercial transport and logistics sectors, ensuring that the movement of goods across Dubai continues efficiently.
The RTA said the move is part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen traffic management, ease congestion on key roads and improve vehicle capacity along affected routes. The measures are also expected to help shorten journey times and enhance the overall efficiency of Dubai’s road network.
Ahead of the October 1 implementation, the RTA will work with Dubai Police and other relevant authorities to launch an awareness campaign outlining the areas and timings covered by the truck movement restrictions.
The campaign will target heavy-vehicle drivers, truck owners, and transport and freight companies, providing them with clear information about the new requirements.
Drivers will also be informed about alternative routes to help them plan their journeys and ensure they understand the restrictions before enforcement begins.
Truck drivers, owners, and transport and freight companies have been advised to comply with the designated restriction timings, use approved alternative routes or make use of dedicated truck rest areas while movement bans are in effect.
The RTA also urged heavy-vehicle drivers to follow traffic signs and official instructions and avoid unauthorised parking on major roads, in residential neighbourhoods or in areas not designated for parking. The authority said compliance would help drivers avoid traffic violations while contributing to the safety of other road users.
Different truck restrictions across Dubai
Truck movement restrictions across Dubai vary depending on the road, location and level of traffic congestion.
Some major routes are subject to a 24-hour ban on truck movements. These include Al Qudra Street, Meydan Street, all marine bridges and the Airport Tunnel.
Other roads and areas have restrictions in place for 16 hours each day, from 6am to 10pm. These include Sheikh Zayed Road and Beirut Street, along with residential areas such as Al Mizhar, Muhaisnah and Oud Al Muteena.
In urban areas including Airport Road, Oman Street and Damascus Street, trucks are restricted during three daily peak-traffic periods.
The restrictions apply from 6.30am to 8.30am, 1pm to 3pm, and 5.30pm to 8pm.
More truck rest areas
The RTA said the continued expansion of Dubai’s network of dedicated truck rest areas forms an important part of its strategy to manage heavy-vehicle movements during restricted hours.
These facilities provide truck drivers with designated locations to wait safely until movement restrictions are lifted, helping reduce unauthorised parking and minimise disruption to traffic on major roads.
The RTA has recently completed 14 of 16 planned truck rest areas across six strategic locations, major roads and logistics hubs in Dubai. The roadside facilities have been developed in partnership with the private sector.
The authority has also increased capacity at seven existing truck rest areas by adding 364 parking spaces, representing a 50 per cent increase. The expansion brings the total capacity at these locations to 1,007 truck parking spaces.
Plans are also in place to develop four additional permanent truck rest areas in collaboration with private-sector partners.
The facilities are designed to provide heavy-vehicle drivers with safe and organised places to wait during restricted hours, while helping reduce unauthorised truck parking on major roads and in residential and industrial areas.
400,000 truck journeys a day
According to the RTA, more than 150,000 trucks use the designated rest areas every month, while around 400,000 truck journeys are recorded across Dubai each day.
The rest areas provide a range of services for drivers, including accommodation and relaxation facilities, prayer rooms, restaurants, shops and fuel stations.
The RTA said the facilities are designed to meet drivers’ needs during mandatory rest periods, help reduce fatigue associated with long-distance driving and support the smooth and efficient movement of goods across the emirate.
Truck drivers and transport and freight companies have been encouraged to use the designated facilities during restricted hours and plan their journeys in advance based on the applicable truck movement timings.
Companies that need to operate trucks during restricted periods in essential cases can apply for a Right of Way Services (ROWS) permit through the RTA website. Obtaining the appropriate permit can help ensure compliance with traffic regulations and avoid violations.
