Dubai Set to Play Decisive Role in SailGP’s US$2 Million Grand Final

Date:

Dubai to Stage SailGP’s Penultimate Event as Teams Compete for a US$2 Million Prize.

Dubai will take centre stage when the Rolex SailGP Championship returns to action, with seven teams competing for the final available place in the season-ending championship showdown.

Following a two-month break after the Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix in Geneva, all 13 national teams are scheduled to compete at the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix, presented by DP World, on November 21–22, 2026.

The Dubai competition will serve as the penultimate event of the season, setting the stage for the championship finale the following weekend.

With only one qualification spot remaining, the Dubai races are expected to play a decisive role in determining which team will join the leading contenders in the final battle for the title.

Two Teams Already Secure Championship Final Places

The BONDS Flying Roos, three-time SailGP champions, currently lead the overall standings with 94 points, having already confirmed their place in the season-ending final.

They will be joined by Los Gallos, who secured qualification after claiming victory at the Geneva event.

The 2024 champions have recorded three event wins this season and occupy second place in the standings with 78 points.

With the top two teams already qualified, attention now turns to the closely contested race for the third and final championship position.

Artemis Moves Ahead in Battle for Final Qualification Spot

The fight for third place took a significant turn during the Geneva competition, as Artemis SailGP Team moved ahead of the U.S. SailGP Team in the overall standings.

Competing in its debut season, Artemis entered the Swiss event just one point behind the American team.

However, its performance in Geneva allowed the team to move into third position with 59 points, establishing a three-point advantage over its U.S. rivals.

Artemis earned four points during the event, while the American team finished without adding to its championship tally.

The U.S. SailGP Team faced additional challenges after regular driver Taylor Canfield suffered a broken collarbone shortly before the competition.

As a result, the team was forced to make a late personnel change, bringing in Martine Grael just days before racing began.

The developments have intensified the qualification battle ahead of the Dubai event, where the remaining contenders will compete for the final place in the championship showdown.

SailGP commentator Stevie Morrison believes Artemis may regret not capitalising further on its opportunity in Geneva, although the team remains in a stronger position than its closest competitors.

Morrison noted that finishing the event among the top three was still an important achievement, giving Artemis a valuable advantage over the United States and Emirates GBR heading into the remaining races.

The U.S. SailGP Team currently holds 56 points, while Emirates GBR follows with 53 points, just three behind the Americans.

Emirates GBR, which secured its first Rolex SailGP Championship title in Abu Dhabi last year, now faces the possibility of missing out on the opportunity to defend its crown.

Artemis Remains Cautious Ahead of Dubai Showdown

Despite moving into third place, Artemis driver Nathan Outteridge believes the competition for the final qualification position remains extremely close.

He acknowledged that the team still has significant improvements to make, particularly with two events remaining in the season.

Outteridge pointed out that sailing conditions in the Middle East could resemble those experienced in Geneva, where lighter winds presented challenges for competitors.

He stressed that Artemis must continue developing its sailing performance to secure a place in the championship final.

The driver also recognised the consistency of the two leading teams, noting that their positions at the top of the standings reflect their strong performances throughout the season.

Although Artemis hopes to compete against them in the Abu Dhabi finale, Outteridge admitted that the team still has work to do before achieving that goal.

Dubai’s Weather Could Influence Race Strategies

Weather conditions in Dubai are expected to play an important role in determining how teams approach the competition.

November typically brings relatively calm waters and temperatures of around 30°C, providing favourable conditions for high-speed foiling races.

These conditions can also make it easier for flight controllers to maintain the stability of the F50 catamarans as they travel above the water.

However, lighter-than-anticipated winds could force teams to make tactical adjustments.

Competitors may choose to use larger wings and reduce the number of crew members on board, requiring sailors to manage several responsibilities during races.

Such decisions could influence boat performance, crew coordination and overall racing strategies.

Narrow Dubai Racecourse Adds Tactical Challenges

The layout of Dubai’s waterfront racing circuit is expected to create additional difficulties for the competing teams.

The relatively narrow course is designed to keep the fleet closely grouped, increasing the likelihood of intense competition and frequent tactical decisions.

As a result, race strategists will play a crucial role in anticipating the movements of rival boats and responding quickly to changing positions on the water.

Another challenge comes from the sea wall running alongside the course, which can interfere with natural wind patterns.

This may create uneven wind conditions, with stronger breezes developing at one end of the racecourse compared with the other.

Teams will therefore need to adapt their sailing techniques and positioning strategies throughout the competition.

Seven Teams Remain in Contention for Final Qualification Spot

With 10 championship points available to the winner of the Dubai event and a further 20 points still to be contested across the Dubai and Abu Dhabi competitions, the battle for the remaining Grand Final position is far from settled.

Although Artemis currently occupies third place, several other teams remain mathematically capable of moving into the top three.

Among the contenders are DS Automobiles SailGP Team France with 46 points, followed closely by NorthStar on 45 points.

ROCKWOOL Racing, with 40 points, and Switzerland, with 39 points, also retain a mathematical chance of securing qualification.

The narrow margins between the competing teams mean that performances in Dubai could significantly reshape the championship standings.

With the final qualification place still available, the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix is set to become a decisive stage in the race for the season-ending championship showdown in Abu Dhabi.

Four Teams Ruled Out of Championship Contention

Meanwhile, four teams have officially lost their chances of qualifying for the season-ending Grand Final.

Germany, Red Bull Italy, Mubadala Brazil and the Black Foils can no longer finish among the championship’s top three teams.

The elimination of the Black Foils is particularly notable, as the team previously secured a place in the Grand Final during the 2024 season.

US$800,000 Prize Purse Adds to Dubai SailGP Excitement

Beyond the championship qualification battle, the Dubai event offers substantial financial rewards for competing teams.

A total prize pool of US$800,000 will be available, with the winning team receiving US$400,000.

The BONDS Flying Roos will be determined to secure victory after narrowly missing out at the previous two events.

Despite leading the final races on both occasions, the team was unable to convert its advantage into a win.

At the Geneva competition, the Flying Roos were defeated by Los Gallos, who will now head to Dubai with renewed confidence following their latest triumph.

With valuable championship points and significant prize money at stake, the Dubai races promise intense competition among the world’s leading sailing teams.
