Dubai RTA driving test: How to book a retest after failing and how much it costs

Date:

Dubai driving test retake: Four mandatory training sessions required before rebooking.

Dubai: Did not pass your Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) driving test? You can schedule another attempt, but there are a few requirements to complete before you can take the test again.

In Dubai, learner drivers who fail their RTA road test must undergo four mandatory practical training sessions at their driving institute before they can book a retest.

They must also pay the applicable test fees, along with any additional training charges imposed by their driving school.

Here is a step-by-step guide to booking your next RTA driving test, understanding the costs and avoiding important deadlines.

How to rebook your RTA driving test online

Learner drivers can schedule a new road test appointment through the official RTA website, rta.ae, or directly through their registered driving institute.

Follow these steps:

  1. Visit the RTA website: Go to rta.ae and search for the service ‘Apply for Booking and Changing a Driving Test Appointment’. Select ‘Start Service’.
  2. Log in to your account: Use your Emirates ID, passport information or UAE Pass. A one-time password (OTP) will be sent to your registered mobile number for verification.
  3. Enter your learner details: Provide your learning permit application number and date of birth.
  4. Choose a test appointment: Select an available date for your next road test or modify an existing booking.
  5. Complete the payment: Pay the applicable RTA test charges.
  6. Receive confirmation: Your payment receipt and appointment details will be sent to you by SMS and email.

How much does it cost to retake the RTA driving test?

The standard RTA road test retake costs Dh220.

The fee includes:

  • Road test fee: Dh200
  • Knowledge and Innovation fee: Dh20
  • Total: Dh220

However, this amount does not include the cost of the four compulsory practical training sessions required after failing the test.

Additional lesson fees depend on the driving institute where you are enrolled.

The RTA also offers other testing options for eligible applicants:

  • VIP driving test: Dh2,620
  • Instant driving test: Dh420, available to eligible applicants holding non-exchangeable foreign driving licences and those applying through the Golden Chance route.

How long must you wait before retaking your driving test?

Once you have completed the four required training sessions, you can proceed with booking another road test.

Depending on appointment availability, the waiting period may be up to 14 working days.

On the day of your test, you must arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to complete the necessary confirmation procedures.

Can you change your RTA driving test appointment?

Yes. Learner drivers can reschedule their road test through the RTA website or their driving institute.

You can postpone your appointment up to 24 hours before the scheduled test.

If you want to bring your test forward to an earlier available date, an additional fee of Dh320 applies.

However, if you fail to attend your scheduled appointment, you will need to make a fresh booking and pay the applicable test fee again.

Important RTA driving test rules to know

Before booking another attempt, keep these requirements and deadlines in mind:

  • Six-month validity rule: Your driving training file may be suspended if you do not attend a Knowledge, Yard or Road Test within six months of your previous test appointment.
  • Additional public holiday charges: Driving institutes may impose extra fees for tests scheduled during official public holidays.
  • One-year licence issuance deadline: If you pass your road test but do not have your driving licence issued within one year, you will need to undergo an evaluation test.
  • Compulsory retraining: Learners who fail the RTA road test must complete the required practical lessons before becoming eligible for another attempt.

Completing your mandatory lessons, checking appointment availability early and keeping track of your training file’s validity can help you avoid unnecessary delays and additional expenses on your way to obtaining a Dubai driving licence.
