Driver to pay Dh5,000 for knocking down woman in UAE

He claimed he could not see the woman because of the sun glare.

A driver was ordered by the Ras Al Khaimah Civil Court to pay Dh3,000 in compensation to a woman – a GCC national – for knocking her down and leaving her seriously injured.

The RAK Misdemeanour Court had earlier slapped him with a fine of Dh2,000 on the same charges.

As per court records, the victim was crossing the Kuwaiti Souk in RAK city when the defendant rammed his vehicle into her. She suffered several injuries all over her body, and had to be hospitalised.

On being notified, the RAK Police rushed to scene and issued a traffic report against the driver, who was blamed for reckless and inattentive driving.

The defendant told the court that he could not see the woman because of the sun glare. “I was not speeding, and I immediately stopped my car when I realised that I had accidentally hit someone I could not see at all.”

He added that he apologised to her, offered her help, and gave her his mobile number, “but she refused, and went away”.

The woman told the police and prosecution that the driver was driving inattentively at a high speed.

“I suffered back and leg injuries due to the crash, apart from psychological trauma.”

Based on the official police and medical reports submitted by the complainant, the court found the driver guilty, and ordered him to pay Dh3,000 in compensation to the victim.
