Diwali flowers in the UAE: Which blooms can withstand the heat and stay fresh longer?

Date:

Certain flowers are better suited to the UAE’s November climate and can stay fresh for longer.

Some memories are wrapped in marigolds; others carry the fragrance of jasmine.

Diwali is a festival filled with the scent of flowers and the earthy aroma of diyas. Homes glow with lights, orange and gold decorations adorn doorways, and colourful petals bring rangolis to life.

Even when you’re away from home during Diwali, the festive spirit is unmistakable.

Many of us try to recreate the warmth of Diwali in the UAE, while keeping the weather in mind throughout the five-day festivities. From choosing table decorations and deciding between diyas and fairy lights to finding flowers that can withstand the heat, getting the details right takes a little planning.

Diwali 2026

Diwali falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026, with Lakshmi Puja scheduled for that evening. Dhanteras will be observed on November 6 and Bhai Dooj on November 10, marking five days of celebrations. November afternoons in the UAE can still reach around 31°C, with humidity hovering at approximately 65 per cent.

A flower garland that might remain fresh for days in a cooler home could wilt much sooner in the UAE. Direct sunlight, air-conditioning vents and even the fruit basket on your dining table can influence how long your blooms last.

The good news is that some flowers are better suited to the UAE’s November climate and can retain their freshness for longer.

Why your Diwali flowers may wilt

Before choosing your blooms, consider where you plan to display them. Three everyday factors can significantly shorten their lifespan.

Direct sunlight: The spot beside the window may be ideal for photographs, but prolonged exposure to sunlight and heat can dry out petals and cause flowers to wilt faster.

Air-conditioning vents: Cool air does not always keep flowers happy. A constant flow of air can dehydrate petals, particularly when garlands are hung directly beneath a split AC unit.

The fruit bowl: Ripening fruit releases ethylene, a gas that speeds up the ageing process in flowers. Marigolds and jasmine are among the blooms sensitive to it, according to the Floral Design Institute.

Temperature also plays a significant role. A Thai study found that jasmine garlands stored at 30°C lasted approximately 39 hours, while those kept in cooler conditions remained fresh for more than 10 days.

1. Orchids: The flowers that go the distance

Although they may not be the traditional choice for a Diwali toran, orchids are an excellent option if you want your home to look fresh throughout the festivities.

Dendrobium orchids, in particular, have impressive staying power. Their cut stems can last around nine days in plain water, while using an appropriate vase solution can extend their life to as long as 18 days, according to a 1987 study by Kasetsart University.

If you’re looking for an elegant arrangement for your dining table or entrance console that will still look presentable after Bhai Dooj, orchids are worth considering.

2. Chrysanthemums (shevanti): The dependable festive favourite

Shevanti may not always take centre stage, but it deserves a place in any Diwali flower arrangement.

Available in bright yellow, crisp white and soft pink, chrysanthemums add colour and volume to floral displays. They are also among the longest-lasting cut flowers. A 2011 study by Japan’s National Institute of Floricultural Science found that chrysanthemums lasted around 20 days in plain water at 23°C, outlasting all the other flowers tested.

That temperature is close to what you might expect in an air-conditioned UAE living room. Keep them indoors, away from balconies and direct sunlight, and they should remain fresh well beyond Bhai Dooj.

3. Tuberose (rajnigandha): For a home that smells like Diwali

Rajnigandha makes a lovely addition to an entrance hallway or living room. Its flower spikes generally last between six and eight days in plain water, depending on the variety, according to a study published in the Indian Journal of Horticulture.

The flowers bloom gradually, with the lower florets opening first while the buds higher up continue to develop. This means the entire spike does not fade at once.

If fragrance is an essential part of your Diwali celebrations, tuberose is a flower worth bringing home.

4. Marigolds (genda): The unmistakable Diwali classic

Can you imagine Diwali without marigolds? Neither can we.

From doorway torans to puja arrangements, these bright orange and yellow blooms are almost synonymous with Indian festivities. Their sturdy structure and densely packed petals also make them better suited to warm conditions than more delicate flowers.

Marigolds can last around five to 10 days in a vase, depending on their freshness and how well they are maintained. Keep them away from ripening fruit, replace their water regularly and protect them from direct sunlight. If you’re hanging garlands, choose a shaded spot away from air-conditioning vents.

And don’t discard them as soon as they begin to dry. Marigolds can retain much of their colour and shape as they dry, offering another way to enjoy them.

5. Roses: Beautiful, but a little demanding

Roses are undeniably beautiful, but they may not be the most reliable choice if you want flowers to last throughout the five-day Diwali celebrations.

At around 20°C, cut roses can remain fresh for approximately 10 days. However, at 30°C, their vase life can drop to about five days. That’s close to the temperature of a November afternoon in Abu Dhabi, which means a vase placed on a sunny windowsill may not last very long.

Roses need clean water, freshly trimmed stems and a cool spot away from direct sunlight. If you plan to use them for your puja or dining table, buy them closer to the day you intend to display them.

6. Jasmine (mogra): One fragrant evening

Few flowers capture the spirit of home quite like jasmine. Its fragrance can bring back memories of temple steps, wedding preparations and warm evenings spent on a balcony.

However, mogra is also one of the most delicate flowers on this list. At 30°C, a jasmine garland may last only around 39 hours before its petals begin to brown and its fragrance fades, according to a 2012 study by Naresuan University. That’s roughly the temperature of a UAE November afternoon, which explains why a garland bought on Friday may look quite different by Sunday.

Rather than buying it several days in advance, save fresh jasmine for Lakshmi Puja. Wear it in your hair, place it beside a diya or use its fragrance to enhance your puja space.

How to put together a Diwali arrangement that lasts

You don’t have to choose between traditional decorations and flowers that can withstand the UAE’s November weather. The key is to combine long-lasting blooms with flowers that are best enjoyed fresh.

  • For the entrance: Opt for marigold garlands. Their vibrant colours and sturdy petals make them a festive favourite.
  • For the living room: Place orchids and chrysanthemums in vases. Both can help keep your interiors looking fresh throughout the celebrations.
  • For the hallway: Add tuberose for its distinctive fragrance.
  • For Lakshmi Puja: Buy fresh lotus and jasmine on Sunday, November 8.

With a little planning, you can enjoy a beautiful floral display without having to replace the entire arrangement halfway through the festivities.

Where to buy Diwali flowers in the UAE

If you’re shopping in Dubai, Karama and Bur Dubai are worth exploring for loose petals, fresh stems and traditional garlands during the festive season.

Perumal Flowers in Bur Dubai and Jasmine Experts Flowers in Al Karama are two shops regular customers can consider.

Prefer ordering from home? Talabat Mart has a dedicated Diwali flowers section featuring loose marigolds, shevanti and ready-made garlands. At the time of writing, 100g of marigolds cost approximately Dh5, while a 30cm garland was priced at around Dh26.

One useful tip: buy loose petals as close as possible to the day you plan to use them. If you’re making a rangoli, Sunday morning is a better time to shop than several days in advance.

Six ways to keep your flowers fresh for longer

A little preparation can go a long way in extending the life of your festive flowers.

  1. Trim the stems: Cut stems at an angle before placing them in a vase. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline.
  2. Keep the water clean: Change the water regularly and clean the vase. If using commercial flower food, follow the instructions on the packaging.
  3. Give marigolds their own arrangement: A university trial found that floral foam reduced the vase life of marigolds. Placing their stems directly in water may therefore be a better option.
  4. Move the fruit basket: Keep flowers away from ripening fruit to limit their exposure to ethylene.
  5. Choose a cool, shaded spot: Avoid windowsills, direct sunlight and areas immediately beneath air-conditioning vents.
  6. Give them a cooler night: If possible, move your floral arrangements to a cooler room overnight.

A little reminder as the last diya burns

Your orchids and shevanti may still be standing when Bhai Dooj arrives. The marigold garlands might have dried, while the tuberose may have lost some of its fragrance.

The jasmine, meanwhile, will probably be long gone.

And that’s perfectly fine. It was never meant to last the entire week. It was meant to be enjoyed that one evening, filling your home with a familiar fragrance and bringing back memories of celebrations far away.
