Did Rachin Ravindra claim MS Dhoni has more fans than Cristiano Ronaldo?

Date:

Ravindra’s Dhoni–Ronaldo comparison goes viral, sparking debate over fan culture.

A clip featuring New Zealand and Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Rachin Ravindra has gone viral after he discussed the fan following of MS Dhoni and football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

The comments sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many users interpreting them as a suggestion that Dhoni enjoys greater popularity than one of football’s greatest-ever players.

But is that actually what Ravindra meant?

What Rachin Ravindra actually said

Speaking to Wisden after returning from a trip to Portugal and Spain, Rachin Ravindra reflected on the immense fanfare he witnessed around Cristiano Ronaldo before sharing his own experience of seeing MS Dhoni’s popularity in India.

“I was lucky enough to visit Portugal and Spain recently. It reminded me of the incredible fanfare surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo, but honestly, I believe MS Dhoni is even greater.”

He went on to clarify the point behind his comparison, highlighting the extraordinary reaction Dhoni receives from fans.

“The noise whenever Dhoni appears — whether on television, walking out for warm-ups, or entering the stadium — is simply on another level.”

Ravindra also shared what it is like travelling alongside the former India captain.

“Everything has to be cordoned off. On flights, passengers spend the entire journey recording him, even if it is just the back of his head.”

Was he talking about global popularity?

Not exactly.

Ravindra’s comments focused on the atmosphere and fan reaction he has personally witnessed around Dhoni, especially during the IPL and while travelling in India. He was describing the extraordinary intensity of Dhoni’s supporters rather than making a statistical comparison of their global popularity.

There is no doubt that Dhoni has one of the most passionate fanbases in world cricket. Every appearance he makes for Chennai Super Kings is often met with thunderous cheers from supporters, regardless of the match situation.

Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, remains one of the most recognisable athletes in sporting history. The Portugal captain has one of the largest global followings of any athlete, with hundreds of millions of fans across the world. His influence extends far beyond football, reaching areas such as business, fashion and entertainment. His impact on popular culture is difficult to measure in words.

So, did Ravindra say Dhoni is more popular?

Ravindra’s exact words were that he believed the fanfare surrounding Dhoni was “even greater” than Ronaldo’s. Whether that means Dhoni is more popular overall depends on how the statement is interpreted.

If the comparison is about the atmosphere inside Indian stadiums and the emotional connection Dhoni shares with his supporters, Ravindra’s view reflects the unique level of admiration the former India captain receives from fans.

If the comparison is about overall global popularity and worldwide reach, however, it becomes much harder to make that argument. Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the most recognisable athletes in history and has one of the largest individual followings in the world. More importantly, football is the most popular sport globally, with fans and players in almost every country, while cricket’s audience is concentrated in a smaller number of regions.

Dhoni’s fanbase is extraordinary and arguably unmatched in Indian cricket, but comparing his global reach with Ronaldo’s is not a direct comparison. The two athletes have built their legacies in sports with very different global footprints.

Ultimately, Ravindra was sharing a personal observation about the intensity of fan culture he has witnessed rather than presenting an objective measure of worldwide popularity. That distinction has largely been overlooked as the clip gained traction on social media.
