‘Ramadan Safe Road’ campaign urges helmet use, vigilance and personal responsibility

Sharjah Police have renewed their call for all road users to uphold traffic safety, stressing that safe roads are a shared responsibility essential to protecting lives and strengthening community well-being.
Traffic officials said road safety remains a key indicator of societal development, noting that many serious accidents result not from mechanical failure but from preventable human behaviour — including traffic violations that could be avoided through strict compliance with the law.
Major Saud Al Shaiba, from the Traffic Awareness Department at Sharjah Police, said the campaign aims to reinforce community awareness.
“Even minor violations or momentary negligence can lead to serious accidents within seconds,” he said, underscoring the importance of constant vigilance and full adherence to traffic regulations.
Captain Humaid Al Hammadi, Director of the Traffic Awareness Branch, emphasised that enforcement measures alone are not sufficient.
“Safety begins with the individual. Respect for traffic laws is the most effective way to protect lives and prevent tragedies,” he said, reinforcing the campaign’s focus on personal responsibility and community cooperation.
Sharjah Police also highlighted common motorcycle and bicycle violations under Article 81 of the Federal Traffic Law. Riders who fail to wear a safety helmet face a Dh500 fine and four black points, with the same penalties applying to passengers.
Officials stressed that wearing a helmet significantly reduces the risk of severe head injuries and fatalities, underscoring its vital role in protecting riders and saving lives.
Sharjah Police said the campaign will continue through field awareness programmes and media outreach, aiming to foster a lasting culture of traffic responsibility across the emirate.
As part of its Safe Roads during Ramadan initiative, Gulf News is highlighting the critical importance of responsible driving during the holy month. The campaign urges motorists to remain fully attentive behind the wheel, warning that any distraction while driving is a dangerous gamble with potentially devastating consequences.
