Ronaldo Claims Jorge Jesus Failed to Keep His Promise.

Football fans were preparing for what many believed could be Lionel Messi’s final appearance in an Argentina shirt when, on the very same day, Cristiano Ronaldo made a major announcement of his own.
The timing certainly caught attention.
Ronaldo has now broken his silence, sharing his side of the story behind his dramatic departure from the Portugal national team camp.
In a detailed statement released on Tuesday, the 41-year-old claimed Portugal coach Jorge Jesus had failed to keep his word. Ronaldo also explained what unfolded during the match against Norway and acknowledged that leaving the national team camp was the wrong decision.
However, one of the most significant points from his statement was clear: Ronaldo has not ruled out representing Portugal again.
He began his statement by revealing that he had already prepared a farewell letter following the 2026 World Cup.
However, during the flight back from the United States, Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença reportedly urged Ronaldo to rethink his decision to step away from international football.
Ronaldo also revealed that Proença sought his opinion on Jorge Jesus, who was being considered for the Portugal managerial role. Ronaldo gave his former Al Nassr coach his backing and said he was genuinely happy when Jesus was eventually appointed.
What unfolded against Norway?
According to Ronaldo, Jesus initially suggested an arrangement that would see him feature in Portugal’s opening and final matches of the international window while skipping the trips to Norway and Denmark.
Ronaldo, however, was not comfortable with that proposal.
As Portugal captain, he believed remaining behind while the rest of the squad travelled would send the wrong message. Ronaldo said Jesus understood his position and agreed with his reasoning.
But the situation reportedly changed on the day of the Norway match.
Ronaldo said one of Jesus’ assistants approached him during lunch and informed him that the coach wanted a conversation. During their discussion, Jesus asked whether Ronaldo felt fit enough to play approximately 30 minutes.
Ronaldo said he was ready.
He then began warming up at half-time in anticipation of being introduced, but ultimately remained on the sidelines and was never brought into the game.
Ronaldo also acknowledged that his reaction afterwards was a mistake. He admitted he should have gone over to recognise the Portugal supporters and apologised to the fans who had travelled to watch the team.
The Pelé and Maradona comparison
Two days later, Ronaldo said he held a meeting with Jorge Jesus, with Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho also present.
According to Ronaldo, an understanding was reached that Jesus would address the Norway situation during his next press conference. The coach was expected to explain what had happened and clarify publicly that Ronaldo had never demanded to be included in the match.
Ronaldo went a step further by publishing the eight talking points he claims had been prepared for Jorge Jesus ahead of the coach’s press conference.
One of the most striking points involved football legends Pelé and Diego Maradona.
According to Ronaldo, Jesus had privately admitted that asking a player of his stature to warm up for an extended period without eventually bringing him onto the pitch had been a mistake. During that conversation, Jesus reportedly compared Ronaldo’s standing in the game to that of Pelé and Maradona.
Ronaldo therefore expected the Portugal coach to deliver a similar message when speaking publicly.
One of the agreed talking points, Ronaldo claimed, was for Jesus to acknowledge that it had been a mistake to ask a player with the stature of Pelé or Maradona to warm up and then leave him unused, while also making clear that such a situation would not happen again.
The prepared notes also stated that Ronaldo had conducted himself professionally throughout, had never demanded playing time and had always respected the coach’s decisions.
Jesus did refer to Pelé and Maradona during his press conference, but Ronaldo says the overall message differed from what had previously been agreed between them.
The Portugal coach instead emphasised that Ronaldo’s status did not entitle him to special treatment. Jesus also made it clear that, as manager, the final decision over who plays and who remains on the sidelines belonged to him.
Ronaldo was unhappy with how the situation unfolded.
He believed Jesus had given him one version of events in private, only to present a different account when speaking to the media. For Ronaldo, that represented another breakdown in trust and ultimately contributed to his decision to leave the Portugal camp ahead of the match against Denmark.

Ronaldo admits leaving the camp was a mistake
Despite his criticism of Jesus, Ronaldo did not attempt to place all the responsibility on the Portugal coach.
He acknowledged that his own actions were wrong and apologised to both his teammates and the Portuguese public for walking away from the national team camp. Ronaldo also accepted that it is now up to the Portuguese Football Federation to assess his behaviour and determine what action, if any, should follow.
The Portugal captain went even further, insisting that wearing the armband should not shield him from disciplinary action.
Ronaldo stressed that the same rules should apply to every player, regardless of reputation or status, and admitted that he must be prepared to face the consequences of his decision to leave the squad.
Is Ronaldo’s Portugal career over?
Not if Ronaldo has anything to say about it.
The Portuguese star also addressed speculation surrounding a potential farewell appearance, acknowledging that the time will eventually come for one—or perhaps more—goodbye matches.
For now, however, Ronaldo is not thinking about his international career as a ceremonial farewell. His focus remains on competing, contributing and helping Portugal win.
Ronaldo explained that once he has served any suspension that may be handed to him, he intends to remain available for selection provided he is physically fit, playing regularly at club level and continuing to score goals.
To underline just how much representing Portugal means to him, Ronaldo recalled remaining with the national team for a match despite learning about the death of his father.
That makes one thing clear: Ronaldo does not consider his international career finished just yet.
At the same time, his statement has brought his disagreement with Jorge Jesus firmly into the public eye. Ronaldo has now given his account of why his trust in the coach deteriorated, while also acknowledging that his own decision to leave the Portugal camp was wrong.
Most importantly, he has kept the door open for another chapter in a Portugal shirt.
The attention may now turn to Jorge Jesus. After Ronaldo’s public claims about what happened behind the scenes, questions will inevitably be raised over whether the Portugal coach will respond and offer his own version of events.
