There comes a point every year when the UAE’s weather finally makes spending time outdoors appealing again.
Evenings become more comfortable, car windows roll down, and group chats suddenly start filling up with plans. For many Emiratis, autumn is less about falling leaves and crisp mornings and more about returning to an outdoor way of life.
After months of intense summer heat, the cooler season brings back desert trips, family get-togethers, outdoor cafés, evening drives and long nights spent catching up with friends.
As soon as the weather cools, everyone heads outside
You know autumn has arrived in the UAE when weekend plans begin to shift outdoors. As temperatures become more pleasant, gatherings, drives and spontaneous outings quickly return to the calendar.
Outdoor seating suddenly becomes the preferred choice, families begin planning evening outings, and friends are more likely to choose a table outside than retreat indoors.
Even a quick drive can easily turn into an entire evening out. What starts as a short trip for coffee might lead to a karak stop, a leisurely drive around the city and, before you know it, several hours have passed.
When the weather is this pleasant, there is simply no need to hurry back home.
Back to the desert
For many Emiratis, the arrival of cooler weather also signals the return of desert season.
Some make a weekend of it with an overnight camping trip, while others opt for a spontaneous evening drive into the dunes with friends.
For some, the appeal lies in the excitement of driving across the sand. For others, it is much simpler: setting up a few chairs, brewing coffee and settling in to watch the sun go down.
Then there are those who come fully prepared, bringing enough food, drinks and camping gear to comfortably stay in the desert until the following morning.
Either way, as temperatures drop, desert outings become less of an occasional escape and more of a regular fixture in the weekend calendar.
BBQ season makes a comeback
Few things signal the arrival of better weather quite like someone suggesting a barbecue.
What begins as a simple family dinner can quickly grow into a lively gathering. One person brings the meat, another takes care of the drinks, someone turns up with snacks and, almost inevitably, one person claims the grill for the rest of the evening.
But the food is only one part of the experience.
It is the time spent sitting around the fire, sharing dishes, catching up and lingering outdoors long after dinner is over that makes these evenings memorable.
Karak runs become the evening plan
Karak may be a year-round favourite in the UAE, but there is something about cooler evenings that makes it even more enjoyable.
A late-night karak run can easily become a plan of its own. What begins as a quick stop for a cup often turns into a long conversation in the car, a leisurely drive around the city and perhaps one more stop before finally heading home.
Sometimes, there is no need for a particular destination. Good company, a car and a favourite karak spot are enough.
Family gatherings head outdoors
Autumn also brings back one of the most familiar parts of Emirati social life: spending evenings together outdoors.
Majlis gatherings, family homes, farms and other outdoor spaces once again become popular places for relatives and friends to meet.
Arabic coffee and dates appear on the table, conversations continue well into the evening, and children have more room to play and enjoy the pleasant weather.
There does not need to be a celebration or special occasion. Sometimes, simply being together is reason enough to gather.
Weekends take on a different rhythm
As temperatures become more comfortable, weekends open up to a much wider range of outdoor activities.
Cycling, walking, horse riding, beach outings and desert adventures all become easier to enjoy. A morning activity might naturally extend into lunch, while an evening walk can end with a coffee or karak stop.
For younger Emiratis, the cooler months are also a chance to discover new cafés, visit outdoor pop-ups and make spontaneous plans that would have been far less appealing during the summer heat.
Suddenly, the UAE feels like it has even more to offer, simply because so much more can be enjoyed outdoors.
Hot chocolate makes its comeback
And as the evenings become cooler, another seasonal favourite begins appearing again: hot chocolate.
Cafés roll out their seasonal drinks, and trying a new spot for a cup can become an outing in itself.
For Gen Z, the experience often goes beyond the drink. It is about discovering the latest café, sampling the seasonal menu, taking a few photos and then deciding where the evening should go next.
So, what does autumn look like for Emiratis?
It is not necessarily about waiting for temperatures to turn cold.
It is about that first evening when sitting outside feels comfortable again. It is the first desert trip after the long summer, the first barbecue of the season, a late-night karak run and a family gathering that stretches well past dinner.
Autumn is the time when life in the UAE gradually shifts back outdoors.
And for many Emiratis, it marks the return of a season filled with gatherings, outings and more reasons to spend time together.
