A UAE court has ordered an uninsured driver to pay Dh220,000 following a crash that resulted in a total write-off.

Dubai: The Al Ain Civil, Commercial and Administrative Court has ordered an uninsured driver and the vehicle owner to jointly pay Dh220,000 in compensation to a motorist whose car was written off in a traffic accident. This follows the driver’s conviction on multiple criminal charges related to the crash.

The court confirmed that both the driver and the vehicle owner are jointly liable for the damages.

Court records show that the driver was previously convicted of causing injury to others, damaging vehicles through negligence, and possessing alcohol without a licence. He was sentenced to jail, had his driving licence revoked, and had certain items seized, according to Emarat Al Youm.

The plaintiff had sought Dh227,000 for the total loss of his vehicle, along with additional moral and material damages. A court-appointed expert valued the car at Dh227,000 before the accident and assessed its salvage value at Dh35,000. The court deducted the salvage value to prevent double compensation.

Judges ultimately awarded Dh220,000 in total compensation, ordered the defendants to cover court costs, and dismissed the other claims.
