A bail order has reignited discussions on accountability within the Malayalam film industry.

Dubai: An Ernakulam court has granted bail to filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan in a sexual harassment case filed by a young actor, a development that has renewed concerns about accountability within the Malayalam film industry.

According to reports from Kerala, the court’s order came after it considered the bail plea and noted procedural aspects of the case, including the absence of any fresh custody request from the prosecution.

Ranjith Balakrishnan was arrested after an actor alleged that he sexually harassed her inside a caravan during a film shoot in Fort Kochi. During the bail hearing, he denied the allegations, claiming the complaint was made in retaliation following a dispute on set.

The case comes amid ongoing discussions in the Malayalam film industry following the Hema Committee report, which highlighted systemic discrimination, abuse, and unsafe working conditions faced by women in cinema. Ranjith Balakrishnan has previously faced multiple allegations, although earlier cases against him were later quashed.

Reacting to his arrest, actor Parvathy Thiruvothu, a founding member of the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), said the situation reflects a broader systemic failure. She noted that repeated allegations against the same individuals point to a lack of consequences, which can contribute to a culture of impunity.

Highlighting what she described as a culture of disbelief toward survivors, Parvathy Thiruvothu had noted that discussions often shift toward questioning victims rather than ensuring accountability. She also pointed out the economic risks faced by women who come forward, saying many lose work opportunities, making the pursuit of justice even more difficult.

Her comments have gained renewed attention following the granting of bail to Ranjith Balakrishnan, with critics arguing that such outcomes risk reinforcing perceptions that the justice system fails survivors.

Further developments in the case are awaited.
