UAE Golden Visa: Graduates from Foreign Universities Could Be Eligible for 10-Year Residency

Date:

Graduates from the World’s Top 100 Universities May Qualify, Subject to Specific Eligibility Criteria.

Dubai: Think the UAE Golden Visa for outstanding students is reserved for those who studied in the country? Graduates of some of the world’s leading universities may also qualify for the coveted 10-year residency, even if they completed their degrees overseas.

However, graduating from a prestigious university alone does not guarantee eligibility. Applicants must meet specific requirements relating to their university’s global ranking, academic performance and graduation date.

Here is what international graduates need to know about qualifying for the UAE Golden Visa.

Who is eligible for the UAE Golden Visa as an international graduate?

Under the UAE’s Golden Residency eligibility criteria, graduates holding a bachelor’s degree from a university outside the UAE must meet four key conditions:

  • University ranking: The university must feature among the world’s top 100 institutions in an international ranking recognised by the UAE Ministry of Education (MOE).
  • Minimum GPA: Applicants must have achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, or its equivalent, in their bachelor’s degree.
  • Graduation date: Applicants must have graduated within the previous two years at the time of submitting their application.
  • Degree recognition: The bachelor’s degree must be duly attested and supported by an equivalency certificate issued by the UAE Ministry of Education.

These conditions apply specifically to the Golden Visa category for graduates of international universities.

Which international universities are recognised?

The UAE government provides a list of international universities that applicants can consult when assessing their eligibility.

It includes globally recognised institutions such as Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge.

However, applicants should consult the official list and applicable ranking criteria rather than assume that graduating from a well-known university automatically qualifies them for residency.

The list is available through the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs at www.mofa.gov.ae/en/top-universities and the Abu Dhabi Residents Office (ADRO) through its international universities list.

Can graduates apply directly for the Golden Visa?

Meeting the academic requirements does not automatically guarantee approval of a Golden Visa.

Eligible graduates must first submit a Golden Visa nomination request through the relevant immigration authority.

Depending on where they are applying, this could be the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) or Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA).

The application is then reviewed by the relevant authorities, with approval subject to their assessment of the applicant’s eligibility and supporting documents.

What are the benefits of the UAE Golden Visa?

The UAE Golden Residency offers eligible applicants a 10-year renewable residence permit, without the need for a local sponsor.

Key benefits include:

  • Long-term residency: The freedom to live, work, study and invest in the UAE.
  • Family sponsorship: The ability to sponsor eligible family members, including spouses, children and parents, subject to applicable regulations.
  • Domestic worker sponsorship: The option to sponsor domestic workers in accordance with UAE rules.
  • Entry flexibility: Eligible applicants outside the UAE can obtain a six-month multiple-entry visa, renewable for a further six months, to complete their residency procedures.
  • Family residency protection: Sponsored family members can remain in the UAE until their residence permits expire in the event of the Golden Visa holder’s death.
