22-Carat Gold Jhumkas Earn Guinness World Records for the Largest and Heaviest Pair of Gold Earrings.

Dubai: A spectacular pair of handcrafted gold earrings has secured two Guinness World Records in Dubai, further strengthening the emirate’s reputation as the global City of Gold.
Named Mayura Sahasra, which translates to “A Thousand Peacocks,” the elaborate 22-carat gold jhumkas were created by Joyalukkas Jewellery and weigh a combined 16.514 kilograms.
Guinness World Records officially recognised the creation as both the heaviest pair of gold earrings and the largest pair of gold earrings.
The record-breaking jewellery was unveiled on October 24 at Jewel of Joy by Joyalukkas in Dubai Gold District.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism, alongside prominent representatives of the jewellery industry and other distinguished guests.
Measuring 1.215 metres in length and 0.682 metres in diameter, the extraordinary earrings required 5,840 hours of craftsmanship.
A team of 55 skilled artisans worked over several months to complete the intricate gold creation.
Dubai’s success inspires record-breaking jewellery
Speaking to, John Paul Alukkas, CEO of Joyalukkas Jewellery, explained that the inspiration behind the project came from the company’s 40-year presence in the UAE and its experience of witnessing Dubai’s remarkable development.
He said the company had observed Dubai achieve numerous world records over the decades and wanted to contribute something meaningful to the emirate’s growing list of accomplishments.
The idea was to create a distinctive achievement within the jewellery industry that would celebrate Dubai’s global reputation as a leading destination for gold and luxury craftsmanship.
Alukkas noted that Dubai has long been recognised as the City of Gold and expressed confidence that the record-breaking earrings would further enhance that identity.
The unveiling followed the recent inauguration of Jewel of Joy, described as the largest jewellery showroom in the Middle East.
Alukkas encouraged Dubai residents and international visitors to see the giant earrings on display at the showroom.
He highlighted the considerable time, dedication and craftsmanship involved in producing the unique jewellery piece, inviting customers to appreciate the finished creation in person.
Traditional jhumka design celebrates peacock-inspired artistry

The record-setting earrings draw inspiration from the peacock, a bird traditionally associated with elegance, beauty and pride in Indian culture.
Their name, Mayura Sahasra, reflects this artistic influence, with the design incorporating elements inspired by the bird’s distinctive appearance.
The jewellery follows the traditional jhumka style, featuring the familiar bell-shaped structure widely associated with South Asian jewellery.
Jhumkas hold a prominent place in Indian cultural and bridal traditions, making the record-breaking creation a combination of traditional craftsmanship and large-scale artistic ambition.
The name Mayura Sahasra is inspired by a traditional legend about a divine peacock that released a thousand feathers, each symbolising a prayer, hope or dream.
The earrings’ elaborate craftsmanship reflects the intricate patterns and beauty of peacock feathers, incorporating the bird’s distinctive plumage into the jewellery design.
During the unveiling ceremony, an official Guinness World Records adjudicator presented certificates confirming both world records to Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism; Dr. Joy Alukkas, Chairman of Joyalukkas Group; and John Paul Alukkas, CEO of Joyalukkas Jewellery.
The event was also attended by several prominent industry representatives and dignitaries, including Laila Mohd Suhail, a member of the Dubai Golden Jewellery Group and chair of its marketing committee; Rashid Alharmoodi, Senior Director of Commercial at Dubai Gold District; and Levy Pezulu, Senior Policy Lead at the World Gold Council.
Dr. Joy Alukkas described the record-breaking creation as a tribute to Dubai and the talented artisans whose dedication made the ambitious project possible.
He highlighted the company’s nearly four-decade journey alongside Dubai’s growth as an international gold and jewellery destination.
According to Dr. Joy, the earrings represent an expression of gratitude to the emirate and a celebration of the craftsmanship required to transform an extraordinary concept into reality.
He added that achieving two Guinness World Records with a single jewellery creation was a proud milestone for the Alukkas family, the company’s employees across 13 countries and the customers who have supported the brand over the years.
Jewellery industry adapts to changing customer preferences
Although the giant gold earrings demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship on a grand scale, John Paul Alukkas said the jewellery industry has undergone considerable changes since his grandfather established the family business.
As a third-generation entrepreneur, he explained that consumer preferences today are significantly different from those of previous generations.

The company has responded by expanding its product offerings to accommodate evolving tastes, including growing demand for lightweight jewellery and designs made from different gold purities.
John Paul said Joyalukkas currently offers a wide selection of lightweight jewellery, including collections crafted in 22-carat and 18-carat gold.
He also revealed plans to introduce 14-carat gold jewellery as part of the company’s efforts to meet changing market requirements.
According to John Paul, understanding customer expectations and adapting to emerging trends have remained essential to the brand’s development.
He emphasised that the company continuously reviews consumer preferences and adjusts its collections to reflect contemporary styles and purchasing habits.
