iPhone Duo UAE pre-orders: 5 major changes Apple’s foldable brings and how much it costs

Date:

Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo introduces innovative features alongside a premium price tag.

Dubai: Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, will be available for pre-order in the UAE from 4pm today, Friday, October 16. Starting at Dh8,499 for the 256GB model, it is the most expensive iPhone the company has introduced.

When folded, the device features a compact 5.4-inch external display, similar in size to the discontinued iPhone mini. Unfolding it reveals a larger 7.6-inch screen, which Apple claims provides approximately 50 per cent more display area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The iPhone Duo operates on iOS 27.1, featuring an interface and multitasking capabilities specifically designed for its foldable form factor.

Apple is positioning the larger display as a major shift in how users interact with their smartphones. However, the practical benefits will depend on individual usage habits and how effectively third-party applications support the new design.

Here is a closer look at six key differences the iPhone Duo introduces, along with the compromises buyers should consider.

iPhone Duo: Key specifications and UAE prices

  • Displays: A 5.4-inch external OLED screen and a 7.6-inch foldable OLED display, both supporting a 120Hz refresh rate. The inner screen features a nano-texture coating designed to minimise reflections and make the fold crease less noticeable.
  • Processor: Apple’s A20 Pro chip, also used in the iPhone 18 Pro.
  • Cameras: Dual 48-megapixel rear cameras comprising a Main and Ultra Wide lens, without a dedicated telephoto camera. A 12-megapixel camera is positioned on the outer display, while the inner screen features an under-display FaceTime camera.
  • Biometric security: Touch ID integrated into the side button, replacing Face ID.
  • Battery: A dual-battery arrangement, with one battery in each half of the phone. Apple claims up to 24 hours of typical usage.
  • Construction: Titanium frame, IP68-rated water and dust resistance, and a weight of 254 grams.
  • SIM support: eSIM only, with no physical SIM card slot.
  • Colour options: Star White and Night Sky.
  • UAE pricing:
    • 256GB: Dh8,499
    • 512GB: Dh9,349
    • 1TB: Dh11,049
    • 2TB: Dh13,599

1. Run two apps simultaneously on the larger screen

The iPhone Duo’s foldable display introduces Split View, allowing users to operate two applications side by side.

Certain apps, such as Safari, can also display two separate windows simultaneously, making it easier to browse multiple pages or work across different tasks.

Users can save their preferred app combinations and reopen them together, reducing the need to repeatedly arrange their multitasking workspace.

In everyday use, this could allow users to refer to a document while composing an email or follow a recipe while preparing a grocery list. Although these activities are already common on laptops and tablets, the iPhone Duo brings similar multitasking capabilities to a smartphone that folds into a pocket-friendly size.

Limitations: The experience depends heavily on application compatibility, and many developers have yet to optimise their apps for the Duo’s foldable display. Users who seldom multitask on their current phones may find limited value in the feature.

2. A larger display for reading and documents

The iPhone Duo’s 7.6-inch inner display provides additional space for reading news articles, viewing PDFs and working with documents compared with a traditional smartphone screen.

Apple has also announced that Apple Pencil (USB-C) compatibility will be introduced later in 2026, enabling users to write, annotate documents and make handwritten notes on either display.

Limitations: Despite its larger screen, the Duo remains smaller than every iPad currently available. Applications that have not been adapted for the foldable format may simply enlarge their existing smartphone interfaces rather than offer an improved layout.

Additionally, Apple Pencil functionality is a future feature and will not be available at launch.

3. New photography tools powered by the second screen

The iPhone Duo’s external display introduces several camera capabilities that are not available on conventional iPhones.

Duo Preview allows the person being photographed to see a live preview on the outer screen, helping them adjust their pose before the picture is taken.

Smart Take, according to Apple, automatically captures an image when everyone in the frame is ready.

Another feature, Kid Cue, displays animations on the external screen to attract children’s attention towards the camera.

The foldable design also enables users to take selfies with the higher-resolution rear cameras while using the opposite display as a viewfinder.

Limitations: Despite these new features, the Duo’s camera hardware is less advanced than that of Apple’s more affordable Pro models.

It does not include a dedicated telephoto camera, instead offering 2x zoom through a crop of the main camera sensor.

The device also lacks the adjustable aperture found on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Apple has not listed support for ProRes or Apple Log video recording.

For buyers whose main priority is professional photography or advanced video recording, the Pro models may offer greater value.

4. A foldable design that doubles as its own stand

One of the iPhone Duo’s practical advantages is its ability to remain upright when partially folded, eliminating the need for a separate stand in certain situations.

Apple has designed the device to support hands-free FaceTime calls and video viewing while resting in this position.

The Duo also supports StandBy mode, displaying information such as the time, photographs and widgets without requiring the phone to be connected to a charger.

Limitations: Some applications may not function optimally when the device is partially folded.

For users who want additional support when the phone is fully unfolded, Apple offers a Folio with Kickstand case priced at Dh529.

5. A new design with compromises compared with regular iPhones

Most recent iPhone generations have focused on improving camera performance, processing power, display quality and battery endurance.

The iPhone Duo takes a different approach by introducing a foldable display as its primary selling point, although the new design comes with several compromises.

Apple has replaced Face ID with a side-mounted Touch ID fingerprint sensor, removed the Action button and opted for a less versatile camera setup than the Pro models.

The device could appeal to people who frequently use tablets for reading, watching videos or completing work-related tasks but would prefer those capabilities in a smaller, more portable device.

However, users who primarily rely on their smartphones for calls, messaging, social media and casual photography may struggle to justify the substantial price difference.

iPhone Duo UAE price: How much will buyers pay?

The iPhone Duo carries a significant premium over Apple’s conventional flagship smartphones.

Across comparable storage configurations, the foldable model costs approximately Dh3,000 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which starts at Dh5,499.

Beyond the handset’s purchase price, buyers should also consider the following expenses and options:

  • AppleCare+: Priced at Dh1,349, increasing the total cost of the 256GB iPhone Duo to Dh9,848.
  • Protective cases: The standard iPhone Duo Case costs Dh319, while the Folio with Kickstand is available for Dh529.
  • Trade-in offers: Apple provides trade-in credit of up to Dh3,260 for eligible iPhone 13 models or newer, depending on the device’s model and condition.
  • Repair costs: Apple has not yet released a complete UAE repair price list for the Duo. Although the protective upper layer of the foldable display can be replaced, the procedure must be carried out by Apple.

Customers purchasing through Apple’s UAE online store can also explore monthly instalment options, subject to eligibility requirements.

Ultimately, the iPhone Duo’s appeal lies in its ability to combine smartphone portability with some of the functionality of a tablet. Whether that convenience warrants the premium price will depend on how much buyers expect to use its larger display and foldable features.

Availability

Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo begin at 4pm today through Apple’s official UAE online store and the Apple Store app. The foldable smartphone will be available for purchase starting Friday, October 23.
