Forensic Specialist Cautions That Young Children Can Drown Silently in Everyday Household Containers.

Sharjah: A young girl lost her life after she was discovered face down in a plastic wash basin containing a shallow amount of water at her family’s residence. The incident has drawn attention to the serious risks posed by water-filled household containers when young children are nearby.
Forensic expert Al Dhabah cited the case to remind parents and caregivers that drowning can occur silently and within a matter of minutes, even in homes without swimming pools or other obvious water-related hazards.
Child Disappeared During a Five-Minute Interval
The incident occurred while the girl’s mother was preparing food in the kitchen and supervising her children. Her daughter was moving around close to her, while her son was playing nearby.
The mother had no immediate reason to suspect danger, as the apartment’s main entrance was securely locked and there were no swimming pools or other apparent hazards inside the residence.
As the mother continued cooking, her son settled down to watch a cartoon on television.
During a five-minute interval in the programme, the mother noticed that her daughter was no longer in sight. She immediately began searching the apartment, checking the children’s bedroom and her own room before asking the household helper whether she had seen the child.
When the girl could not be located, the mother expanded her search throughout the home. Since the front door remained locked, she continued checking the rooms and eventually entered the bathroom adjoining the living room, where she found her daughter lying face down in a plastic wash basin.
Shallow Water Leads to Fatal Drowning
The basin was normally used by the mother to wash her children’s clothes by hand. At the time of the incident, it contained only a shallow quantity of water, filling less than one-quarter of the container.
The mother quickly pulled her daughter out of the basin, sought assistance and called emergency medical services. The girl was rushed to hospital, where medical staff attempted to save her life. However, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and she was declared dead on arrival.
Drowning Can Occur Silently and Without Visible Distress
Al Dhabah cautioned against the widespread belief that drowning is always accompanied by shouting, splashing or desperate attempts to seek help.
He explained that young children may drown without making any noise, as they can be unable to raise their heads above the water or cry for assistance once their faces become submerged. As a result, such emergencies can occur without attracting attention, even when a parent or caregiver is close by.
The incident serves as a reminder that even a shallow quantity of water left in an ordinary household container can present a life-threatening danger to small children.
Parents Advised to Eliminate Household Water Hazards
Parents and caregivers are urged to empty buckets, washing basins, bathtubs and similar containers immediately after use to prevent water from remaining accessible to young children. Even a few centimetres of water can pose a serious drowning risk.
Bathroom doors should remain securely closed, and childproof locks should be installed wherever possible to prevent children from entering these areas without adult supervision.
The case also reinforces the need for continuous and attentive supervision of young children. Losing sight of a child for even a brief period can lead to serious consequences, and the absence of noise should never be taken as an indication that a child is safe.
