Inside Abu Dhabi’s Transforming Landmark: A Versatile Venue Designed for Concerts, Sports and Major Events

Etihad Arena: Transforming Abu Dhabi into a Premier Destination for World-Class Entertainment.

Abu Dhabi: Along the Yas Bay waterfront stands Etihad Arena, a landmark entertainment venue capable of accommodating up to 18,000 spectators while also transforming into an intimate 500-seat theatre. This flexibility goes beyond architectural innovation, reflecting Abu Dhabi’s vision of creating adaptable spaces that cater to diverse public experiences.

Designed by architectural firms HOK and Pascall+Watson, the indoor arena can be reconfigured from a large, in-the-round venue into a smaller theatrical setting, allowing it to host events of varying sizes. Its versatility highlights Abu Dhabi’s growing reputation as an international destination for major sporting competitions and live entertainment.

Originally known as Yas Arena, the Miral-developed venue forms part of the expanding Yas Bay waterfront district. Its importance extends beyond the performances and competitions it hosts, demonstrating how a single architectural space can continually evolve to offer visitors different experiences.

Recalling an earlier entertainment experience on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi resident Dina Roshdy said, “One of my earliest memories of attending a concert of that magnitude on Yas Island was seeing Bruno Mars perform on New Year’s Eve in 2018 starting 2019 with a bang.”

Aser Ahmad, a graduate of Abu Dhabi University in Al Ain, recalled his first visit to the venue.

“I first visited Etihad Arena on October 19, 2023, during UFC 294 Abu Dhabi Showdown Week,” he said.

One venue, multiple experiences

Etihad Arena’s adaptable design allows the building to take on a different atmosphere depending on the event.

During sporting competitions, spectators focus on the central arena floor, while concerts introduce elaborate stages, lighting installations and alternative seating arrangements. These transformations influence how visitors experience the space, from the sense of intimacy to crowd movement and overall accessibility.

Heba Aljuneibi, an Emirati digital executive based in Abu Dhabi, said the venue offered noticeably different experiences depending on the occasion.

“My experience at the venue was quite different depending on the event. I attended both sporting events and concerts, and I noticed a huge difference between the two,” she said.

For Ahmad, the arena’s architecture and visual appeal left a lasting impression.

“The building is impressive, especially at night when its curved facade lights up. Inside, the stage lighting, the giant screens and the scale of the arena made it feel like a world-class venue.”

From international sporting events and live concerts to musicals and stand-up comedy performances, Etihad Arena accommodates a wide variety of entertainment formats within the same structure.

This versatility makes it more than a conventional performance hall. It functions as a large-scale public venue capable of adapting its identity and atmosphere to suit different audiences.

Aljuneibi particularly appreciated the arena’s spacious design during sporting events.

“For sporting events, the venue was amazing. It could accommodate a large number of people without making you feel like the place was overcrowded, simply because of how spacious it was,” she added.

Etihad Arena’s ability to adapt to different types of performances was demonstrated during the Abu Dhabi debut of Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo, which ran from June 12 to 21.

The production featured a distinctive two-sided seating arrangement, with the stage positioned in the centre and spectators seated opposite one another. A touring team of 117 cast and crew members accompanied the show, which also featured live musicians performing on stage.

The innovative layout transformed the expansive arena into a more intimate theatrical environment, demonstrating how the venue can accommodate productions that require a completely different audience experience.

Yas Bay’s transformation into a waterfront destination

Etihad Arena has become a prominent architectural feature of Yas Bay, contributing to the district’s development as a major leisure and entertainment destination.

Beyond its impressive scale, the building incorporates design elements intended to address Abu Dhabi’s challenging climate.

In recognition of its environmentally conscious approach, the venue received the Sustainable Building Design of the Year award at the 2018 MENA Green Building Awards.

Its architects incorporated shading, natural daylight and energy-efficient building-envelope features to help reduce energy consumption in the region’s hot weather conditions.

The surrounding Yas Bay district has also continued to evolve, with restaurants, retail outlets and hotels transforming the waterfront into a lively destination for residents and tourists.

As a result, the arena serves not only as a venue for major international events but also as an important part of Abu Dhabi’s expanding nightlife and leisure offerings.

For Abu Dhabi resident Dina Roshdy, the arena’s adaptability is one of its most appealing qualities.

“What I particularly love about Etihad Arena is its versatility. It can host these incredible, high-energy performances while also creating a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere where you can really appreciate the music,” she said.

Inside Etihad Arena: What visitors say about the experience

Etihad Arena has welcomed a wide range of major sporting and entertainment events, including UFC competitions, NBA games, international championships, concerts and touring theatrical productions.

While its adaptable design allows it to accommodate different audiences, visitors say the experience can vary significantly depending on the event.

For Aser Ahmad, attending UFC 294 was particularly special because it gave him the opportunity to watch his favourite fighter, Khamzat Chimaev, compete.

“My latest visit was for UFC 294, and it was unforgettable,” he recalled.

He also praised the organisation and overall atmosphere of the event.

“Everything was well organised, from the parking to my seat, and the fan zone outside was full of activities. Nothing felt uncomfortable; the atmosphere was amazing from start to finish,” Ahmad added.

Meanwhile, Roshdy is eagerly anticipating an upcoming live performance by renowned composer Hans Zimmer.

Describing his music, she said it has an “incredible ability to transport the listeners to a different world”.

“I’m already wondering how they’ll bring a performance of that magnitude to life inside Etihad Arena. Between the orchestra, the lighting, the acoustics and the cinematic atmosphere, I have a feeling it’ll be nothing short of spectacular,” she said.

Different events, different audience experiences

Despite its versatility, visitors acknowledge that the arena’s atmosphere and comfort levels can differ depending on the type of event and seating arrangements.

While its spacious layout can comfortably accommodate large sporting audiences, concerts may create a more crowded environment, particularly when stage configurations and audience movement patterns change.

Heba Aljuneibi, an Emirati digital executive based in Abu Dhabi, shared a different perspective on attending concerts at the venue.

“The venue felt much more crowded. I tried both VIP and regular seating, and honestly, I think the VIP experience was disappointing,” she said.

Her experience highlights how the same venue can offer contrasting levels of comfort and enjoyment depending on the event format and seating category.

A landmark shaping Abu Dhabi’s entertainment future

Etihad Arena represents more than an architectural addition to Abu Dhabi’s waterfront.

Its ability to transform from an 18,000-capacity arena into a smaller performance venue reflects the capital’s approach to developing flexible public spaces that can accommodate changing entertainment demands.

By bringing international sporting competitions, large-scale concerts, theatrical productions and more intimate performances under one roof, the arena contributes to Abu Dhabi’s growing cultural and entertainment landscape.

Ultimately, its significance lies not only in its striking design or the international events it attracts, but also in how it continues to adapt to the diverse interests and experiences of the people who visit it.
