Dense Fog in Abu Dhabi Prompts Speed Limit Cut to 80km/h on Major Roads

Abu Dhabi Drivers Advised to Exercise Caution as Fog Reduces Visibility.

Abu Dhabi: Foggy conditions and reduced visibility affected several parts of Abu Dhabi on Tuesday morning, prompting authorities to advise motorists to exercise additional caution while driving. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued a fog alert that will remain in place until 9am.

In response to the conditions, Abu Dhabi Police activated its fog-related speed reduction system on a number of major routes, temporarily lowering the maximum speed to 80km/h.

In alerts posted on X, police said the reduced speed limit applied to Sweihan Road between Al Hayer Roundabout and Nahel Roundabout. The measure was also introduced on Sheikh Tahnoun Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan Road between Masaken and Al Hayer, as well as Nahel Road between Nahel and Bid’ Bint Saud.

Authorities advised drivers to remain alert as fog continued to affect horizontal visibility in some locations. Motorists were also reminded to comply with temporary speed limits displayed on road signs and electronic information boards.

The fog speed reduction system allows Abu Dhabi Police to temporarily lower speed limits on roads affected by poor visibility. When the system is activated, traffic radars are adjusted to the revised speed limit, meaning motorists who drive above the temporary restriction could face penalties.

Police frequently advise drivers to exercise greater caution when travelling in foggy conditions. Motorists should maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead, use low-beam headlights and avoid sudden lane changes. Drivers are also advised not to use hazard lights while their vehicle is moving.

Before beginning their journey, motorists are encouraged to check official police and weather updates for the latest road and visibility conditions. They should also plan ahead and allow additional travel time when fog is expected.
