UAE Police Release Footage as 296 Red-Light Violations Are Recorded in 2025.
Sharjah: A motorist who drove through a red light at a busy Sharjah intersection narrowly escaped a serious collision, prompting police to remind drivers about the potentially dangerous consequences of risky behaviour on the road.
The incident, which occurred at night, was captured by traffic cameras monitored by the Sharjah Police Operations Centre. Footage shows a white sedan approaching the junction and continuing across despite the traffic signal being red.
The car proceeded straight through the intersection and crossed active traffic lanes, narrowly avoiding vehicles that were turning through the junction at the time.
Sharjah Police released the footage as part of its ongoing road safety awareness campaign, highlighting how ignoring traffic signals in an attempt to save a few minutes can put drivers and other road users at serious risk.
‘Do not let your rush cause an accident’
Sharjah Police called on motorists to remain patient and respect traffic signals, stressing that saving a few moments on the road is never worth putting lives in danger.
“Do not let your rush be the reason for a traffic accident. Obey traffic signals to maintain your safety and the safety of others,” police said.
Authorities also advised motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time, adhere to speed limits and stay particularly alert when approaching intersections. Jumping a red light can endanger drivers, passengers and pedestrians, especially at busy junctions where vehicles are moving in different directions.
Police emphasised that traffic signals play an essential role in regulating road movement, preventing collisions and protecting lives. Motorists were urged to follow traffic regulations and practise responsible driving at all times.
296 traffic incidents linked to red-light violations in 2025
Running red lights was among the causes of road accidents recorded across the UAE in 2025, according to statistics from the Ministry of Interior.
Official figures showed that 296 traffic incidents nationwide were linked to motorists crossing red lights or red-arrow signals.
Penalties for red-light violations
Sharjah Police warned that jumping a red light is considered a serious traffic offence under UAE law.
The violation carries a Dh1,000 fine, 12 black points on the driver’s licence and vehicle impoundment for up to 30 days.
Motorists who repeatedly commit traffic offences may face more severe consequences, including longer vehicle impoundment periods. Accumulating 24 black points can also lead to the suspension of a driving licence.
