UAE-India Travel: Can You Save Money by Flying to Dubai to Buy an iPhone 18 Pro?

Date:

iPhone 18 Pro costs less in the UAE, but travelling to Dubai for a single device could wipe out the savings.

Dubai: The iPhone 18 Pro carries a considerably lower price tag in the UAE than in India, making Dubai an attractive place to buy the device for Indian travellers who are already planning a visit. However, flying to the UAE solely to purchase the phone may not deliver the same savings.

Apple prices the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro at Dh5,099 in the UAE, compared with ₹164,900 in India. The 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Max is listed at Dh5,499 in the UAE and ₹179,900 in India.

Using an indicative September 24 exchange rate of ₹26.1268 per dirham, the UAE prices work out to approximately ₹133,221 for the iPhone 18 Pro and ₹143,671 for the Pro Max. That translates into an initial price difference of about ₹31,679 and ₹36,229, respectively. The actual cost may vary depending on the exchange rate and fees applied by a buyer’s bank or payment provider.

These figures represent the potential savings based solely on listed prices, before taking travel expenses and any applicable customs duties into account.

For Indians already travelling to Dubai for work, a holiday or to visit family, buying the phone in the UAE could offer meaningful savings because the cost of the flight is already part of the trip. But for someone considering a journey solely to purchase an iPhone, the calculation changes significantly. The cost of travelling to Dubai would need to fit within a price advantage of roughly ₹32,000 to ₹36,000 for the trip to make financial sense.

Is it worth flying to Dubai just to buy an iPhone?

Consider a buyer who spends ₹30,000 on flights and other additional travel expenses. Before factoring in customs duties or payment-related charges, the potential saving would shrink to roughly ₹1,700 on the iPhone 18 Pro and ₹6,200 on the Pro Max. If total trip expenses rise to ₹40,000, purchasing either phone in Dubai would end up costing more overall than buying it at Apple’s listed price in India.

These figures are only illustrative and should not be treated as actual airfare quotes. The final calculation will vary depending on the traveller’s departure city, travel dates, visa and accommodation expenses, and whether the Dubai trip was already planned for another purpose.

Purchasing two iPhones may increase the combined difference between UAE and India prices, but that does not necessarily make a dedicated shopping trip worthwhile. Travellers returning to India must consider the value of both devices when assessing potential customs liability.

India’s customs allowances apply individually to each eligible passenger and cannot be combined or pooled. Baggage provisions for personal effects also do not cover goods brought into the country for commercial purposes.

Can customs duty reduce the savings?

India permits used personal effects required for everyday use to be brought into the country duty free. A phone that is genuinely being used by a traveller may qualify under this provision, depending on the circumstances. However, simply opening a newly purchased phone or removing its packaging does not automatically make it an exempt used personal item.

If customs officials consider the device a new purchase, an eligible Indian resident or tourist of Indian origin arriving by air can use a ₹75,000 general duty-free allowance. Customs duty is payable on the value exceeding the available allowance.

For baggage, the applicable basic customs duty rate is 35%. The 10% personal-import tariff announced in India’s 2026 Budget does not apply to this baggage calculation.

Using the converted UAE prices mentioned earlier and assuming the traveller has the full ₹75,000 allowance available, the illustrative customs duty would be approximately ₹20,400 for the iPhone 18 Pro and ₹24,000 for the Pro Max.

After accounting for that duty, the price advantage over Apple’s listed India prices would fall to roughly ₹11,300 for the Pro and ₹12,200 for the Pro Max, even before adding travel expenses or payment charges. The actual amount can vary depending on customs valuation and the value of other goods carried by the passenger. Goods covered under the baggage tariff heading are exempt from the social welfare surcharge.

The calculation therefore depends heavily on the purpose of the trip. If Dubai is already part of your travel plans, compare the UAE and India prices while factoring in payment charges and the possible customs treatment of the device. But if you are travelling solely to buy one iPhone, airfare and other expenses could consume most or all of the initial saving, with any customs duty reducing it further.

Travellers carrying goods that attract customs duty must declare them before proceeding through the Green Channel.

There are also product differences to consider. Apple says UAE iPhone 18 Pro models support eSIM only, while models sold in India offer both a physical nano-SIM and eSIM. Warranty service may also be subject to restrictions outside the country where the device was originally purchased.
