That remarkable four-goal haul was another reminder that, even at 39, the Argentine remains capable of delivering extraordinary scoring numbers.
Ronaldo, however, is considerably closer to the historic milestone. The Portuguese star has scored 978 goals in 1,333 appearances, leaving him just 22 goals away from reaching 1,000. Messi, by comparison, needs 73 more.
On paper, that gives Ronaldo a significant advantage. But several factors could still make the race more competitive than the numbers suggest.
Age advantage
One of the biggest factors in Messi’s favour is his age. At two years younger than Ronaldo, Messi could potentially have more time to continue playing at the highest level and close the gap.
At 39, Messi has shown few signs of slowing down in front of goal. His four-goal display against Montreal was the latest example of his ability to change the course of a match almost single-handedly.
If he stays fit and continues to play regularly for Inter Miami, the Argentine could still have several productive seasons ahead of him.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, has consistently shown that age is no obstacle to his goalscoring.
Now 41, the Portuguese star continues to find the net regularly, having built his career on exceptional physical conditioning, discipline and an extraordinary determination to remain at the highest level.
A sizeable gap
While Messi has age on his side, the numbers still give Ronaldo a significant advantage. The Portuguese forward has scored 51 more career goals than his long-time rival.
For Messi to close the gap, maintaining his current scoring rate alone will not be enough. He would need to consistently outscore Ronaldo over an extended period. His four-goal performance against Montreal was certainly a major boost, but one outstanding display cannot erase a 51-goal deficit.
Messi would need to sustain an exceptional scoring rate while Ronaldo’s output declines significantly — ideally, both factors would work in his favour.
For now, the most likely outcome is that Ronaldo becomes the first of the two to reach 1,000 career goals. With just 22 goals remaining, the historic milestone is firmly within his sights.
