Motorists travelling from Sharjah towards Dubai will have access to two additional lanes on a key section of Emirates Road starting Sunday, August 30.
The expansion is expected to reduce journey times by up to 25 per cent during peak hours.
The expansion covers a five-kilometre stretch towards Wadi Al Amardi and comes as traffic between Sharjah and Dubai is expected to increase with the end of the summer break.
Schools across the UAE will reopen on Monday, August 31, bringing thousands of school buses, parents and other commuters back onto the roads.
Road capacity set to increase by 33%
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said the number of lanes on the affected stretch will increase from six to eight.
The expansion will boost the road’s capacity from 12,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour, representing an increase of around 33 per cent. The additional capacity is expected to cut journey times by up to 25 per cent during peak periods, according to the authority.
The upgrade is particularly aimed at easing traffic travelling from Sharjah towards Wadi Al Amardi, a route used by motorists commuting between the Northern Emirates and Dubai.
More than 240,000 vehicles use road daily
Emirates Road is a major traffic corridor in the UAE, carrying both private vehicles and heavy trucks. According to the RTA, more than 240,000 vehicles travel along the road in both directions each day.
The highway links Dubai with the Northern Emirates and provides connections to major roads, residential communities, industrial areas and logistics hubs.
The latest expansion forms part of ongoing efforts to accommodate growing daily traffic between Sharjah and Dubai as residential and commercial developments along the corridor continue to expand.
Ongoing upgrades along Emirates Road
Emirates Road has undergone several traffic improvements in recent years as authorities seek to increase capacity and strengthen connections with surrounding communities.
The upgrades include a new access point to Al Awir 1, improvements to entry and exit points at various locations, and enhanced connectivity with Al Amardi Street and nearby development areas.
