Saudi Arabia introduces three-month iqama renewal option for domestic workers

Date:

New three-month iqama option offers greater flexibility for Saudi domestic worker sponsors.

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has introduced a new option allowing employers to issue or renew residency permits (iqamas) for domestic workers for periods starting from three months, providing greater flexibility in managing employment-related expenses.

The service was launched by the Ministry of Interior, through the General Directorate of Passports, in coordination with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development and the national recruitment platform Musaned.

Under the new system, employers can choose from flexible residency periods of three, six, nine, 12, 15, 18, 21 or 24 months for domestic workers and other eligible categories, according to Okaz newspaper.

The iqama issuance or renewal process can be completed digitally through the Absher platform, allowing employers to select a duration that best suits their needs.

The new system allows employers to pay iqama fees only for the selected residency period, eliminating the need to commit to longer renewal durations.

For permits issued or renewed for three months or any multiple of three months, payments can now be made on a quarterly basis, offering greater flexibility for employers.

Previously, domestic worker residency renewals were typically available only for one- or two-year periods.

The updated system aims to provide employers with greater flexibility in managing residency-related expenses while meeting the varying requirements of households and domestic workers.

The initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to modernise residency services, streamline government processes and enhance digital access for residents and employers.
