UAE’s NCM introduces first agentic AI assistants for weather forecasting

Date:

The NCM has started rolling out the first phase of its roadmap by introducing two agentic AI assistants into its operational systems.

To accelerate the adoption of agentic artificial intelligence across UAE government operations, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has launched the country’s first agentic AI assistants in the meteorological sector and approved a comprehensive roadmap to expand their use across its services.

The initiative reflects the centre’s commitment to advancing the national meteorological system, improving operational readiness, and supporting the UAE’s vision of a more efficient, agile, and proactive government.

This initiative aligns with the UAE’s strategic vision to harness advanced artificial intelligence technologies to improve government performance, enhance service quality, and support decision-making through innovative solutions that empower national talent and use technology to benefit society.

Dr Abdulla Ahmed Al Mandous, Director General of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) and President of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), said the adoption of agentic AI reflects the UAE leadership’s vision of leveraging advanced technologies to build a more efficient, future-ready government ecosystem. He added that the centre is translating this vision into practical applications that strengthen decision-making and enhance national preparedness for weather and climate-related events.

He stressed, “We do not see artificial intelligence as a substitute for human expertise, but as a knowledge partner that enhances specialists’ capabilities by providing advanced tools for data analysis, risk assessment, and timely decision-making. Human expertise will always remain at the core of our operations, with experts retaining full authority over final decisions, while AI improves speed, efficiency, and accuracy.”

He noted that NCM has already begun implementing the first phase of its roadmap by deploying two agentic AI assistants in its operational environment, with plans to expand the system across additional technical and operational sectors. The initiative represents one of the first practical applications of agentic AI in meteorology, built on a network of autonomous yet collaborative intelligent agents that support data monitoring, analysis, reporting, and forecasting, while keeping final decisions with experts.

As part of the rollout, NCM has introduced two assistants—Al-Rasid and the Forecaster Assistant—within operational forecasting centres. Al-Rasid provides continuous monitoring and early warnings by analysing real-time data from weather stations, radars, satellites, seismic networks, and air quality systems, issuing alerts when anomalies are detected and generating updated national weather summaries.

The Forecaster Assistant supports numerical weather prediction by comparing multiple global models, assessing forecast uncertainty, preparing draft weather and marine bulletins, and generating dashboards that highlight potential hazards, helping forecasters make faster and more informed decisions.

NCM emphasised that all AI outputs remain subject to expert review and approval in line with international AI governance standards. The roadmap also envisions expanding agentic AI into climate services, early warning systems, aviation meteorology, seismology, air quality monitoring, and media communications through an integrated ecosystem of intelligent agents.

A comprehensive governance framework underpins the system, ensuring data protection, transparency, explainability, traceability, and continuous performance monitoring. The initiative marks a key milestone in NCM’s digital transformation journey and reinforces the UAE’s position in applying advanced AI to strengthen resilience and sustainability.
