Diney Borges: Meet the UAE Pro League defender inspiring Cape Verde’s heroics against Spain

Al Bataeh defender plays key role as smallest World Cup nation stuns European champions.

Cape Verde’s heroic 0-0 draw against European champions Spain is set to be remembered for years.

The World Cup debutants arrived in the United States as clear underdogs. Ranked 64th in the world, they are the smallest nation by land area ever to qualify for the tournament and relied on a 40-year-old goalkeeper playing in Portugal’s second division.

Yet at the final whistle, it was Spain who were left frustrated.

While veteran goalkeeper Vozinha earned deserved praise for a standout performance, another key figure in Cape Verde’s defensive display also has a strong connection to the UAE.

That player is Al Bataeh centre-back Diney.

So who is Diney?

Diney’s full name is Edilson Alberto Monteiro Sanches Borges. Born on January 17, 1995, in Tarrafal on Santiago Island in Cape Verde, the defender has quietly built a steady professional career across multiple countries before stepping onto football’s biggest stage.

The 31-year-old currently represents Al Bataeh, where he has established himself as one of the club’s most dependable defenders.

His route to the UAE included spells in Portugal and Morocco, during which he built a reputation as a strong, reliable centre-back with the ability to organise and lead a defensive line.

Standing tall against Spain

Cape Verde went into the match knowing they would spend long stretches defending against one of the world’s most potent attacking sides.

Spain controlled possession with 74 per cent of the ball and dictated large phases of play. However, Cape Verde’s defensive structure held firm throughout, producing an organised and disciplined display that frustrated their opponents.

Diney was one of the key figures in that defensive effort, alongside his centre-back partner Roberto Lopes, who plays his club football in Ireland. Together, the pair delivered a composed and disciplined performance at the heart of Cape Verde’s back line, helping to neutralise Spain’s star-studded attack.

The 0-0 draw stood out as one of the biggest shocks of the tournament so far, earning Cape Verde the first World Cup point in the nation’s history.

A remarkable World Cup statistic

One of the most striking details from the match underlined Cape Verde’s defensive discipline.

Despite sustained pressure from Spain, Cape Verde committed just a single foul across the entire game.

According to available World Cup records dating back to 1966, that represents the fewest fouls committed by any team in a FIFA World Cup match.

It was a remarkable milestone for a side making its debut on football’s biggest stage.

A proud moment for the UAE Pro League

While Vozinha’s performance will dominate much of the attention, Diney’s role in the result deserves equal recognition.

The Al Bataeh defender played a significant part in one of the greatest results in Cape Verde’s football history, further highlighting the growing presence and quality of players competing in the UAE Pro League.

For a country of just over half a million people, holding European champions Spain to a goalless draw already felt like a dream. For Diney, it became another reminder of how far a football journey can go—from the streets of Tarrafal to the stage of the FIFA World Cup.
