In a statement, the ministry conveyed its deepest sympathy to the families of the victims, as well as to the government and people of India, and wished a swift recovery for those injured.
The severe weather hit late Wednesday and persisted into Thursday, uprooting trees and power poles, damaging homes and infrastructure, and blocking roads with debris, according to officials.
At least 104 deaths have been confirmed across around a dozen districts, with dozens more injured and hundreds of homes damaged, according to the state relief commissioner’s office.
In Prayagraj—a historic city known for the pilgrimage site at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers—residents reported sudden darkness and strong winds that struck with little warning.
The storms also caused damage to agricultural land and livestock, worsening losses in rural areas that were heavily affected by the downpours and hail.
Yogi Adityanath directed authorities to provide financial assistance to affected families within 24 hours and to speed up rescue operations, stating that relief efforts were ongoing across the worst-hit regions.
The severe weather occurred during India’s pre-monsoon season (March to June), a period when northern plains often experience intense thunderstorms, dust storms, and lightning that can lead to sudden and widespread damage.
Meteorologists noted that while such events are common during this season, their intensity and impact can vary significantly depending on local atmospheric conditions.
