A Turkish Airlines aircraft caught fire while landing at Nepal’s main airport on Monday, prompting a temporary shutdown of operations. No injuries were reported.
The flight, arriving from Istanbul, landed at Tribhuvan International Airport with fire and smoke seen on the right landing gear. Emergency crews quickly responded, brought the fire under control, and safely evacuated all passengers, according to airport officials.
Tribhuvan International Airport was shut down on Monday morning following the incident.
There were 277 passengers on board the Airbus A330 aircraft.
Several flights bound for Tribhuvan International Airport were placed on hold while authorities investigated the incident and worked to clear the airport’s only runway.
Nepal experiences relatively frequent aviation accidents due to its mountainous terrain and unpredictable weather, which often create challenging flying conditions.
In 2015, a Turkish Airlines aircraft landing in dense fog at Kathmandu skidded off a slippery runway, leading to the airport’s closure for several days.
No injuries were reported, and the aircraft was later removed from the airport and eventually turned into a museum exhibit.
