UAE Doctors React to UK Guidelines: Should Children Under 5 Be Limited to Just One Hour of Screen Time?

Date:

The guidelines also advise parents to avoid fast-paced content and focus on shared screen time with their children.

UAE-based doctors are advising parents to adopt a balanced and mindful approach to children’s screen use, in response to new UK guidance recommending stricter limits for young children.

According to reports, children under five should have no more than one hour of screen time per day, while those under two should not use screens independently.

The guidance also advises parents to avoid fast-paced content and promote shared screen time, as well as ‘screen swaps’ like reading or playing simple games.

Medical professionals in the UAE say the guidance aligns with established knowledge on early childhood development, particularly the value of real-world interaction.

Dr. Waleed Alomar, Specialist Psychiatrist at Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital, Al Qusais, emphasized that early childhood is a critical period for brain development, during which learning is largely driven by sensory experiences, play, and human interaction.

He noted that excessive screen time — especially passive viewing — has been linked to delays in language development, weaker problem-solving abilities, and reduced executive functioning.

Emotional and Social Development
Excessive screen time can also affect a child’s emotional growth, potentially limiting their ability to develop empathy, emotional regulation, and social skills, which are best learned through direct interaction with caregivers and peers.

However, not all screen use is harmful. High-quality, age-appropriate content viewed together with a caregiver can offer educational value when used in moderation.

Risks of Content Type and Solo Use
Doctors have highlighted concerns about the type of content children consume. Fast-paced videos, with rapid scene changes and overstimulating visuals, may train young minds to expect constant stimulation, which can contribute to shorter attention spans and difficulty focusing on real-world activities.

Children who use screens alone may also be more prone to irritability, reduced impulse control, and challenges transitioning away from devices.

Impact on Sleep and Physical Health
Dr. Sneha John, psychologist at Medcare Camali Clinic, emphasized the broader effects of excessive screen use on sleep and physical well-being.

“Screen exposure, particularly in the evening, can disrupt natural sleep patterns and make it harder for children to wind down,” she said. “Additionally, screen time often replaces physical activity, limiting opportunities for movement, outdoor play, and the development of motor skills.”

Balanced Approach Over Strict Limits
Rather than focusing solely on strict time limits, Dr. Sneha John advises parents to establish a balanced routine that prioritizes sleep, physical activity, and meaningful interaction. She recommends setting clear boundaries, such as keeping devices out of bedrooms and maintaining screen-free times during meals and before bedtime.

Practical Strategies for Families
Experts suggest practical ways to reduce screen dependence, including offering engaging alternatives like reading, drawing, and outdoor play, modelling healthy screen habits, and gradually reducing usage rather than abruptly removing devices.

Parents in the UAE acknowledge the challenges of limiting screen time, especially in busy daily routines.

Sara Hassan, mother of an eight-month-old, said she avoids introducing screens early, believing that young children benefit more from exploring their surroundings and interacting with others.

Mouza Al Muhannadi, who has three children aged 14, 13, and a younger child, said she uses screens selectively as a practical tool rather than a default solution. She explained that screens are not the first choice, and that short periods of quality time, simple home activities, and clear schedules make a noticeable difference.
