Dubai: The Arab League’s Council at the ministerial level has unanimously approved a resolution to recommend former Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy for the role of Secretary-General of the League of Arab States. This recommendation will be submitted to the 35th Ordinary Session of the Arab Summit, scheduled to take place in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Fahmy’s proposed term is five years, starting 1 July 2026.

The endorsement came during a meeting of the ministerial council, where Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, expressed gratitude for the Council’s unanimous support. He highlighted that the decision underscores Arab nations’ confidence in Egypt’s expertise and its ability to advance collective Arab initiatives.

Candidate Nabil Fahmy expressed his sincere gratitude to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for nominating him for the position. He also thanked the member states for their unanimous support during the 165th session of the foreign ministers’ meeting.

Fahmy affirmed that he accepts this important responsibility with the utmost seriousness and awareness, particularly in light of the unprecedented challenges and blatant violations of international law confronting the Arab world.

He pledged to honor this trust through the Arab League by actively consulting with member states to tackle these challenges, aiming to ensure a more secure, stable, and prosperous future while reinforcing development initiatives and consolidating shared interests across Arab nations.
