What to expect on an Etihad Rail passenger journey: 5 key highlights for UAE residents

Date:

Etihad Rail, stretching from Al Hilal City in Fujairah to Sila in Abu Dhabi near the Saudi border, is expected to serve 36.5 million passengers per year by 2030.

If UAE residents were asked about one of the most anticipated events of 2026, many would point to the launch of Etihad Rail’s passenger services.

The national rail network is approaching its debut and will seamlessly connect multiple regions across the UAE. Stretching from Al Hilal City in Fujairah to Sila in Abu Dhabi, near the Saudi border, Etihad Rail is projected to carry 36.5 million passengers annually by 2030.

On Tuesday, Etihad Rail shared further details about its upcoming passenger services. Here are five key things residents can expect when the trains begin operating later this year:

1. Guaranteed seating
Etihad Rail has confirmed that all passengers will have guaranteed seating on the trains. While details of the ticketing system are still being finalised, a spokesperson at last year’s Global Rail Conference in Abu Dhabi said passengers will be able to book tickets in advance or purchase them at stations via vending machines. The trains will offer both business and economy classes, designed to provide a comfortable travel experience.

2. Timeliness
Operating at speeds of up to 200 km/h, the trains will run on a consistent schedule, making it easier for passengers to plan their daily routines, including commuting to work. The network will connect 11 key cities and areas, including Mohammed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, University City in Sharjah, and Al Hilal in Fujairah, according to Etihad Rail.

3. Onboard facilities
Passengers can expect a seamless and convenient travel experience, with onboard Wi-Fi, power outlets at every seat, dedicated luggage space, and planned catering and hospitality services. A spokesperson confirmed that ten of the 13 trains in the fleet have already arrived in the UAE and have been tested and certified for operation.

4. Beautiful views
One of the highlights of the journey will be the scenic landscapes across the UAE. Passengers will travel through desert towns, coastal communities, cultural hubs, and emerging destinations such as the Almaha forests and the Hajar mountains. Last year, Azza AlSuwaidi, Deputy CEO of Etihad Rail Mobility, described the ride as a “lovely experience,” offering glimpses of dunes and desert scenery along the route.

5. Peaceful journey
The trains are designed to provide a calm and comfortable travel experience, with family seating areas and spacious interiors. Free from traffic delays and accompanied by beautiful views, the journey offers families a chance to reconnect, while business travellers can relax or catch up on work. Each train is expected to accommodate up to 400 passengers.

As further details emerge, it is clear that Etihad Rail’s passenger services are set to transform transportation in the UAE, providing a fast, comfortable, and scenic alternative for residents and visitors alike.
