Sharjah: The Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST) continues to showcase powerful stories of resilience, ambition, and unwavering dedication. Among this year’s standout athletes are basketball player Ameena Alhosani and shooter Fatima Obaid Alsuwaidi, both representing Sharjah Women’s Sports Club, who shared insights into their journeys and future aspirations.

On her journey and ultimate goal

“My journey in sport has been built on discipline, sacrifice, and teamwork,” Ameena says. “Every achievement reflects the collective effort of the entire team rather than any individual.”

Her ambition is clear — to continue winning titles, represent both her club and the UAE at the highest level, and inspire young girls to pursue sport with confidence and belief in their abilities.

On the support from family and club

Ameena credits her strong support system as a cornerstone of her success.

“Our families are our greatest motivators, and the club has provided everything we need — from professional coaching to local and international training camps, all within a positive environment that encourages growth.”

This foundation, she explains, allows the team to focus entirely on performance and compete with confidence.

On how she started

Ameena’s sporting journey began in volleyball before she transitioned to football, eventually returning to volleyball.

“The team spirit and competitive energy drew me back and enabled me to perform at a high level,” she says. “Being part of the continued growth of women’s sport in the region motivates me every single day.”

On training and the importance of AWST

The team’s training programme is intense and highly structured, featuring extended camps and thorough preparation.

“Tournaments like AWST are essential because they elevate competition and push us to constantly improve,” she says. “We were proud to win the first West Asia Championship, and we aim to secure the next title as well.”

On her journey and ultimate goal

Fatima describes her journey in shooting as one centred on discipline and continuous self-development.

“The sport teaches you to control your focus, emotions, and mindset before anything else. Every competition strengthens my confidence and mental resilience.”

Winning bronze at AWST 2026 marked a proud milestone in her career, but she views it as just the beginning.

“My ultimate goal is to represent the UAE at international championships and consistently reach the podium at regional and global competitions.”

On support from family, club, and educational institution

Fatima emphasises the vital role of collective support in her progress.

“My family has always encouraged me to follow my passion while balancing sport and education. Sharjah Women’s Sports Club provides professional coaching, world-class facilities, and a motivating environment.”

She also acknowledges the understanding shown by her educational institution, which has supported her training and competition commitments.

“This collective support empowers athletes like me to pursue excellence with confidence.”

On how she started and what inspired her

Fatima was introduced to shooting through sports programmes designed to encourage young women to explore different disciplines.

“What inspired me most was the concentration and composure required. Shooting depends as much on mental strength as physical skill.”

Watching female athletes represent the UAE at high levels further motivated her to commit seriously to training and competition.

On training and the importance of AWST

“Training in shooting demands consistency, precision, and mental discipline,” she explains. “Each session focuses on refining technique and improving accuracy under pressure.”

She believes tournaments like AWST are vital for growth.

“They provide meaningful competitive experience against top athletes from across the region. Such events challenge us to perform at our best and help us grow both technically and mentally as elite competitors.”
