Youth energy is UAE’s journey to future, says Sheikh Mohammed

The govt attaches great importance to the role of youth and their empowerment in order to enable them to shoulder responsibilities.

The UAE was established on “young ideas”, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has said.

Sheikh Mohammed took to Twitter on Wednesday to share an inspirational message on International Youth Day that is marked annually on August 12. He said the UAE is proud of its youth “who manage the ambitions of its people”.

“From exploring the space to managing our nuclear reactors, and establishing sustainable economic development, we believe that ideas and energy of the youth are the fuel that moves us in the journey of achieving all our goals,” Sheikh Mohammed tweeted.

The UAE government attaches great importance to the role of youth and their empowerment in order to enable them to shoulder responsibilities, innovate and contribute to the welfare of the UAE’s community. Here are a few youth-focussed initiatives the country has launched.

In February 2016, Sheikh Mohammed called on UAE universities to nominate three young men and women who had either graduated in the previous couple of years or were in their final year, for the post of Minister of State for Youth Affairs. Eventually, 22-year-old Shamma bint Sohail Faris Al Mazrui was appointed.

> The youth on government and private boards
In June 2019, the UAE Cabinet adopted a decision to mandatorily include young Emiratis on the boards of directors of government entities, institutions and companies. On February 3, 2020, the Cabinet approved 33 young Emiratis as members of the boards of directors for key federal entities.

> Youth hub
In 2017, the UAE Government launched Youth Hub, a community space for the UAE’s youth where they could meet and connect with other budding minds. Youth Hub caters to young people between the ages of 15 and 35.

> Emirates Youth Council
Sheikh Mohammed had announced the establishment of Emirates Youth Council that will represent youth ideas, aspirations and solutions before the government.
