ToTok unavailability is a ‘technical issue’

Date:

ToTok issued a statement on Sunday, addressing the issue, saying that they had engaged with Apple and Google to fix the issue.

The chat and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) smartphone application ToTok suddenly left users in shock when it stopped being available over Android and Apple app stores on Saturday. The app’s makers have now assured users that the unavailability is “temporary … due to a technical issue”.

ToTok issued a statement on Sunday, addressing the issue, saying that they had engaged with Apple and Google to fix the issue. The company also offered a solution to users in UAE and around the world on how they could still download the app.

The statement said: “For our new users with Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo phones, ToTok is available in the phone maker’s app store. All other Android users can install the ToTok app from our official website as a temporary solution. We have worked incredibly hard to deliver one of the best apps in the market.”

The app has over 30,000 positive user reviews shared on the Apple and Google stores to date. In response to ‘security concerns’, the app said: “We equipped ToTok with such high-security standards as AES256, TLS/SSL, RSA and SHA256, to diligently protect the user data. We also implemented a privacy framework that complies with the local and international legal requirements to safeguard our users at all times.”

According to a report by an Arabic daily, the Telecommunications Regulation Authority (TRA) said it had nothing to do with the app. “The app belongs to an international company,” it said.

The mobile app used for free HD voice and video calls had grown in popularity after BotIM’s in-app announcement directing users to the app. Unlike BotIM, which requires a Dh100 subscription fee, ToTok is free of cost and users have said it provides high-quality calling services.
